Here's a quick game I made today to help me learn more about lua and pico8. Actually really happy how it turned out even if it's just a simple game about taking photos of birds. Might end up making this into a full game with unity or game maker some day!

Arrow keys to move. O opens inventory. X to take photos on photo screen. Find birds and take their picture.

Pretty much the final version besides adding sounds and music and fixing a few glitches. Please let me know if you notice anything or have suggestions!

I love bird watching in real life, so this is totally my jam. Your bird sprites are lovely! I took pictures of all the birds I found even though I only needed one of each I think, haha.

Short + sweet, @lordofdutch. I wish it was a little bit longer and held more challenge. Gold star.

Here are a few ideas:

  1. You must take a "good" picture of the bird. So that would be more challenging using perhaps a shaky camera that the player must stabilize.

  2. The photos you take can be sold to get better camera equipment for the harder-to-photograph birds that never let you get too close. IE Zoom lens and other power ups.

  3. Birds appear on the map randomly and seldom in the same space twice.

  4. The player once touching a bird opens a new map where they must approach the bird and touch this NEW bird and not be seen by them. The bird would be looking in directions and possibly follow a pattern the player would have to memorize.

  5. Player is rated according to their level. "Pigeon, Hawk, etc."
