I present to you a celeste classic mod that offers a unique perspective on vanilla with a gameplay twist that keeps you on the edge of your seat. A very high skill ceiling, but fun for anybody that wants to pick it up and see how far they can go.

Features:

  • All 31 screens from the original game have been stitched together into one big mega-map!
  • An unlocked camera
  • Rising lava that wants to prevent you from ever reaching the summit
  • 5 unique difficulties
  • Every berry remains functional
  • A score based on how far ahead of the lava you are when you reach the summit
  • New tunes! A remix of the classic classic music
  • A new coat of paint. An optional palette swap to keep things looking fresh

Credits:

  • Me, Warspyking: Design, coding, playtesting
  • Meep: Help debugging, made the lava waving effect, playtesting, brainstorming
  • RubyRed: Created the absolute banger of a remix you listen to while playing

And here's a video of completion on expert difficulty

Thank you guys for the kind words (or at least, I'm going to take "diabolical" as a compliment :D)
It's my first real finished mod/p8 game so I'm glad it turned out well.

FINALLY! I'M FREE!!! (But that was only easy mode... with no berries ._.)
Not sure why it says only 4 deaths, I might have reset at some point. This actually took me several hours and several hundred deaths. Probably the hardest thing I've done in any PICO-8 game ever.

Despite how much this drove me insane, I will say that I really liked seeing the camera be unlocked with one consistent motion through all of the screens interwoven into one large map. Really cool idea. Nice mod overall.

Before I end this post, I want to ask if this mod is based on this level from a SMW hack... https://youtu.be/NZsoEC4-Ja8?t=1384

Congrats pow! It's pretty tough, beating it on any difficulty is an achievement. The game was designed to be fun in the same way that an endless runner would be, but the summit is reserved for the best of the best :)

The idea for the game did not come from that hack, actually, although I do take heavy inspiration from mario in general. I wanted to unlock the camera and just imagine what celeste mountain would look like if not broke into screen by screen chunks. I knew, though, that wouldn't make for an engaging enough gameplay experience on it's own. It'd be cool, sure, but only in the same way that a museum is cool. It'd be something to look at not really something to play.

I needed something that would make the game actually fun to play, but wouldn't take away from the primary focus of the mod being to re-imagine celeste mountain in one level. Naturally, my mind jumped to autoscroll (this is actually why the game is called scrolleste) but I quickly realized with the pacing of the levels that wouldn't flow too well (looking at you 2800m), so rising lava was quickly born as a compromise. Something that chases you up the mountain without restricting you if you go "too fast".

The result was a re-imagined vanilla experience with a twist, and I think it turned out great personally :)

Waa so cool! But I think I want an option to turn the lava off just to experience the scroll of Scrolleste.
