In case you missed it, the Humble Voxatron Debut now has a total of 7 games. 3 of Lexaloffle's earlier titles have been added to the lineup, and 3 guest games: Blocks that Matter, Gish, and The Binding of Isaac. You can download them from your Humble games page, and as usual all updates are free, cross-platform, and DRM-free.
Jasper's Journeys is an adventure platformer I made with my brother Jumps (who did gfx & map design), and Dr. Petter (sound). We originally released it for DOS in 1997, and later reworked the whole game and released a Windows & Mac version in 2008. And it's still in active development! (More on that soon). Jasper is an old-school platformer that doesn't shy away from being challenging, and generally videogames. It requires you to conserve your ammo and treasure in order to complete the game. If that's not your thing, there's also a cushy easy mode. Wuss.
Chocolate Castle and Zen Puzzle Garden are both puzzles with an emphasis on interesting puzzle design and shareable puzzles & solutions. I also added a flash version of each game to the site, so you can play any puzzle a user posts right in your web browser. I'm particularly fond of Zen, as it's the only game I've made that I feel the rules of the game have a strong and natural connection with the thematic interpretation they are embodied in.
If you notice a similarity between the first and last images, it's because Swing Swing Submarine have added a rather wonderful Chocolate-inspired set of levels to Blocks That Matter. You can access it by clicking the block of chocolate on the title screen.
The rules of Chocolate Castle have been remixed into the Blocks world, and to good effect. In the screenshot you can see a slime about to eat through connected blocks of the same colour, allowing the protagonist to get through. To top it off, the puzzle set comes with remixes of the Chocolate Castle music. After finally getting the chance to play through properly yesterday, my face was hurting from grinning so hard.
Part of the reasons I like Blocks That Matter is that it takes a few simple puzzle rules and explores the rich space of possibilities they generate. Designing games from simple elements that combine in interesting ways is something I also try to aim for. I guess it's a general design rule, that parts should be given meaning by their interactions with each other, but BTM does it particularly well. Come to think of it that design goal is also expressed in the title of the game. Yes. Yes, they do matter.
In related news, check out Humble's trailer for the recent addition of games that includes some footage of kick-ass Voxatron levels by Jumbify, XGrantWallX, and Anthony Flack.
Saw this as soon as it came out. What about an entitlement to the future release of Swarm Racer 3000? :P
I am most entertained. This has made my day taste a little more like cookies.
You should fix the website to list Linux as an option for the games.
Also, I seem to lack sound on Linux 64bit for Chocolate Castle, Jasper's Journeys & Zen Puzzle Garden.
But yeah, thanks. Chocolate Castle is very nice and Jasper is harder than I first thought - No one told me I'm going to lose my triple shot when I change a level :( - There goes 300 game money. At least I've used it to kill the boss quickly.
A fox made out of blocks.
bug: I already mailed lexaloffle about "Linux not listed" issue with the website. I got no response.
Hi, I'm playing Chocolate Castle from the build of humblebundle for 64bits linux (installed on debian) and I have no sound (as @bug). Is there any workaround or something? Thank you ^^
