Porklike
Porklike is a minimalistic, classic Roguelike made in the Pico-8 enigne. Enter the tower of Wurstlord. Can you make it to the top and steal his legendary Kielbasa? 9 floors of dangerous traps and enemies await you. Only if you move carefully and master your character's abilities will you become the champion of Porklike.

The music was composed by Sebastian Haßler. The environment art as well as the protagonist was inspired by the work of the pixel artist @pixelartm and used with their permission. The artwork of the enemies was inspired by the work of the pixel artist @kirai_s and used with their permission as well.
Porklike was created as part of a video tutorial series. If you want to make your own Roguelike, please check it out:
Ha! I just started watching your series! It's really neat to see this! I've sort of been jumping around the episodes trying to see some stuff. Haven't actually started on the game bc I'm not at my computer watching your vids <shrug>. Can't wait!
Heck yeah! Great game and nice manual.
A fine roguelike indeed.
A classical roguelike, on Pico-8, no less? That's like two of my retro gaming guilty pleasures!
Your game development series is an inspiration to us all :D
EDIT: I just realised that the gameplay here is very Necrodancer-esque. I might make a CotN demake for my next Pico-8 game!
Just recently watched the tutorials too and I was wondering where porklike was actually published. Nice to see it popping up here now :) Great work on the game and great work on the tutorials too! :D
I've been watching your tutorials for a while now and gg dude!

Really like it! The manual telling you how to play looks super cool, and I like how you can't take to long in each level.
I really want to learn how to make stuff like this, but I use a chrmebook and it has parental controls on it, so I can't watch normal Youtube, so it'll be a while till I can learn, not that I had Pico-8 on my computer anyway.
Simply the best pico-8 game ever. Please continue making games @Krystman =))
Hello Krystman, I am slightly new to Pico-8 and I was wondering if I could do a re skin of Porkalike. I would still give you full credit when I post it.
This is most excellent. Gameplay is very well balanced, yet challenging enough to warrant repeat plays.
@SmellyFishstiks It's revenge for that one thing that you did. ;)
I watched your introspective of Porklike on Youtube the other day. It resonated strongly with me as I went through a lot of the same stuff on Zedwolf, I just wanted to say thanks for talking about it :)
Thanks for this game and the great tutorial series!
Guess what game I played first, when I managed to update my PocketCHIP to Pico-8 v0.20i!? :)
(I died on floor 8 unfortunately... ;) )
Another short question: Why did you ditch the idea of the endlessly running bass loop on floor 0? In the release version the complete music seems to be playing from the start.
@CeriX Ha! Looking good. I did not ditch it. It's a genuine bug that nobody noticed until now. Thank you! Will release an update soon.
Also, you can kill Wurstlord? (I used a Porklike Wurstlord mod to find this out.)
@evman2k Yes, you can kill him.
Not sure what you are describing there but first screenshot seems perfectly fair considering it must be the 2nd floor.
Second screenshot - "corn" tiles obstruct line of sight. Walking through plant rooms can be risky.
I killed Wurstlord by using a plant to snipe him when I ran in circles.
:)
Also Doh! I must remember to not not comment on a game while playing.
Is there any way to heal?
also, nice pig-and-crossbones art for when you die.
(I'm not being sarcastic, for some reason, it interests me)
you get some health at the end of every 3rd floor and rarely chest although items can really save you in a pinch so the design behind the game I think was to make items and usage well pay off over tanking stuffs
Oh noes! I killed the Wurstlord, only for him to return the next level! That guy is relentless!
I venture in a deep dark dungeon. Cleaver in hand, I smite every foe who darest challenge thy to a battle! Laughing with confidence, it was shattered for thee Wurstlord had awakened, I stood no chance to a beast like him, I retreat to the stairs, delaying his arrival once again...
Wow this is great! I have to admit, I wasn't sure I would like it based on the screenshot but it's lots of fun :D
@Jerry_Boy I cannot count how many times you have killed/tricked that guy.
@Jerry_Boy LOL that's amazing. How did that happen? Did you push him inside?
@Krystman and @AgentTom Thanks for the compliment! I lured him into the chamber, then I used the Suplex to throw him in.
I made a recolor mod for this game, check it out:

love your videos btw
Great Game, really like it alot!
It seems that on (very) rare circumstance the Exit will not be generated. Somehow I got stuck in this Room and can't find an Exit^^.
According to the Cartridge I use, it's v3...
--
EDIT: Once again on Floor 7 :\
EDIT²: @Krystman below me: Oh wow, Thank you. Need to get a closer look next time^^.
@Astorek86 The first one is tricky, but I'm pretty sure the exit was in the bottom right corner.
On the second one you left a whole room half-explored.
Nice game, found you and PICO-8 on your Youtube channel. To exit the inventory must press (Z) and not (O) as in the manual. Great game!!! regards
SO what is everyone's strategy for winning this game?
Myself, I try to avoid confrontation, pick up what treasures I can, break into walls, and yet I still can't make it past level 7... on a good run.
I think the biggest thing that kills me is being out of parody with the monsters. Most roguelikes give you a "hold" movement, so the monsters have to take a step towards you. This game doesn't do that without burning one of your powerups, assuming it doesn't move you. Otherwise you end up running around the dungeon with a monster one step behind you looking for a pot or chest to open. Is there some big brain strategy I'm missing with this game?
how to post pictures
also i figured out that you can push plants into anotherplant and have the non pushed plant eat the other plant XD
New to Roguelikes, but enjoying this. Is this pretty accurate to the original rogue? Or more of an offshoot?
Also, any tips for when there's one space between you and a mob? I feel like if I could make my brain do it, there's probably three moves in a small room that would get me right next to them every time...
