I'm enjoying this game, but not quite understanding the significance of the left most card on the lane. Spending resources on it gives it plus marks, but I can't discern if those plus marks do anything...it feels like I'm missing something important here...otherwise, this game is pretty fun, but very challenging. It's taking forever to beat the second boss (dracula), but I'm definitely enjoying losing!
@hseiken The plus marks are an indication to how many you have bought of it. After the plus signs has been filled, it will stop giving you the golden guard and instead function like any other card in the middle Lane. This is to stop you from buying the same card but also to mix it up more! Thanks for the feedback and happy that you like it ☺️
BTW, I ran into a bug when retrying a game but I can't reproduce it. The starting deck had 0 cards in it. I couldn't redraw or draw at all, but enemies kept attacking as did boss. Again, I can't reproduce it but I'll say it came after quite a few games.
@hseiken I thought I fixed that.... Thanks for notifying me, will see if I will try to fix it again!
In the past, that bug seemed to happen when a game ended with an empty deck (because there were less than 5 cards remaining) - I remember specifically playing it after the new update and seeing the deck refill correctly, so I don't know what happened this time.
For what it's worth, hitting F9 right after seeing the empty deck sometimes captures what the board state was right before the game ended in the GIF? Which might be useful for debugging.
@packbat thanks for helping. Will see if I will fix it or it will be fine, it is not game breaking (just restart and no battle have been lost). So nice seeing such passionate help from you though!
Sorry, I think I may have miscommunicated? I've not seen the problem hseiken mentions since the update - I was specifically watching for it under the circumstances I remember seeing it, and I didn't see it. Will let you know if I do see it, though!
@packbat I was mostly referring to your help in general, but thanks!
This is fun... too fun... Keep it up. Also, are you gonna add any new cards or backgrounds or bosses anytime soon?
@Vinnyc11 glad you like it! I am afraid not, I have reached the token limit too many times so if it will eventually come a update it will be in a form of a follow up not made in pico8 😅
Not feedback, just a gamebreaking combo.
So if you ever get the chance to, get great fishing rod or shifty barkeep and use dj boney (On 2 attack cards or more.) then bring it back with the rod or barkeep and use it again. It's guaranteed to give you 10 or more attack, and remember, that's with just 2 1-attack (I forgot the name sorry) cards, now with around 2-3 2-attack cards, you'd have some serious attack.
And @Elastiskalinjen
I wanna thank you again(?) for making this game, it's really fun, and I can't wait for future updates.
@Vinnyc11: I don't think that's gamebreaking, that's just synergy? A lot of the strategy of deckbuilding games is building a lot of synergy into your deck with randomized resources available.
Also, resisting the temptation to leave an enemy around for many consecutive turns in hopes of capturing it and using it yourself, which I do way too much. >_>;
@Vinnyc11 that is just a good strategy, a really good one at that. The fishing rod is a really powerful card, I love the graveyard mechanics! Thanks! :)
Just beat Spark-y, this game is amazing!
The title music is a bop, too!
I think I might have come across a bug. I killed a monster (I think it was a 3 or 4 point monster, sorry, I forgot), and it was supposed to have given me one armour and turned my gold to attack, but it never happened.
@Antikx Thanks for sharing, makes making games worth it! Hmm. Never seen that bug, I might take a look at it, thanks for sharing!
@Aimaniac Thanks glad to hear it! I love the music too, first time collaborating with a musician, @BibikiGL is great!
After I continued to play it seemed like the whole game was glitching. I was never getting attack and armour points like I was supposed to. I restarted the game and it it was ok after that. shrug :)
@Aimaniac that is just a good and fun strategy, you need every bit to deafeat all bosses :)
I've lost so many runs to looking at an enemy, thinking "mm, that would be delicious to capture" and then getting nibbled to death...
I lost so many games by accidentally forfeiting. I had no idea I was doing it, I would just be dealing my final damage to the boss for the turn and pressing x to try and end my turn and I would insta-die. I thought I was just missing some lose condition concept of the game. It wasn't until I started writing this comment did I notice that it says "forfeit" when hovering over the boss :facepalm:
Great game otherwise! Would be nice if that button had a confirmation prompt though.
[edit] Darn, I had baby shark on 1 hp then I did it again :P I notice it does prompt you on forfeit if you have resources left, but not if you have no resources left.
Hey I found a bug. After using the old hermit card, if you end up killing yourself with it and choosing rematch, you will not be able to draw, and cards will not auto draw at the beginning of the next round.
Just another comment complimenting you and your game. I haven't been on lexaloffle too much recently and coming back, this is the first game I decided to play after my hiatus. I've gained some skill and beat the first 2 bosses in 1-2 tries.
This is one of my favourite Pico-8 games. Thanks for making this.
Is it okay if I build another game heavily inspired by this? The idea is to have similar mechanics, card effects, controls, and card stats. But it'll have different art and sound. And it won't be written in Pico-8.
@Zuf Thank you!
I am in the middle of making a follow up in love2d now so making it in a new engine would not be very kind.
But this card game is a deck builder of the likes of Ascension or Star realms. So what I would suggest is to play some more deck builders and see what you want to recreate! It is always more rewarding to create something original!
Good luck!
+1 try ascension. This game isn't quite like it, but the idea of earning cards through the game is a main mechanic they both share. Somehow, there's a minor 'rpg grind' feel to it without feeling grindy. :)
@Elastiskalinjen
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Ascension and Star Realms. They're great, and they gave me more to think about. I've also played Dominion and Slay the Spire before.
I'll try making something more original.
Great fun and great polish. I don't think I understood everything at first though. I love it!
@Gucci-Chicken I just released a completely new version out now on Steam!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2147020/Cards_with_Personalities/
@irdumb I have also fixed this in the pico-8 version regarding accidentally forfeiting! :)
Thanks everyone for playing and giving tons of feedback here! :)
