Controls: Move the bird with d-pad, jump the bike with x

How to play:
Collect as many letters as possible with the bird.
Avoid running into rocks in the road as the bike.
Hitting an obstacle with the bike will cause it to become unsteady and slow down.
If the bike slows down too far it will fall over and end the run.
Land the bird on the bike to return it to normal.
The bike cannot jump while the bird is sitting on it.
Hitting an obstacle while unsteady will cause the run to end.
If the bird is pushed off-screen too far to the left, the run will end.

Goal: get the highest score for letters/distance travelled.

I've worked really hard on the art for this game, but it's the gameplay I'm not too confident with at this point. I would appreciate any and all feedback regarding the game feel and difficulty level, or anything else you think could be improved upon.

  • the bike can now jump again while unsteady but loses speed in this state
  • if the bike's speed gets too low it will fall over and end the run
  • the bird can still land on the bike to stabilise it and will restore the speed of the bike once it takes off again
  • hitting an obstacle while in the unstable state will still end the run

  • added a scoreboard that displays your distance travelled, number of letters collected, and the percentage of letters collected. Also shows if your score is higher than a previous score this session. (saving these between sessions is something I still need to add)

Cute concept and lovely art! The way the background changes over time reminds me of Alto’s Adventure. Splitting your attention between the bird and the bike is tough but interesting.

It feels pretty difficult for me, but I’m bad at this kind of game. I had trouble getting more than 5–6 letters. The bike doesn’t stay in the air very long, so you really have to time the jump right. That was the hardest part for me.

Edit: Actually, it seems like sometimes the bike jumps higher and stays in the air longer. But I can’t figure out what I'm doing to get that effect.

Thank you @coyboy for the feedback. It seems I accidentally broke the jumping mechanic while trying to adjust something else in the game. I've now fixed this so you get the full jump height each time you press the button which should make clearing the rocks significantly easier.

I'm glad you enjoyed the art direction, and yes I was inspired by Alto's Adventure when deciding to add the time of day changes.

I can't quite figure out why I slow down as the bike, I see the bird running into balloons and stalling there. I love the split thinking here and am eager to see any updates around the movement mechanic.

Hey @kydlo, thanks for the feedback. I'm a little confused as to what you're not understanding about the game's mechanics, so I'm hoping you can clarify what you mean so I can make adjustments as necessary to help people play the game.

The bike slows down when it hits a rock or other obstacle, you have to avoid hitting these by timing your jumps over them. To return the bike to normal speed you have to land the bird on the bike, otherwise the bike will fall over once it slows down too far.

You said "I can't quite figure out why I slow down as the bike" - are you failing to jump over the obstacles, or do you not understand the part about landing the bird onto the bike to return it to normal speed. Is it perhaps that you're not noticing when you hit an obstacle - do I need to make that clearer? Please be as detailed as possible in your response so I know what it is I need to address.

Lovely game. A simple concept, beautifully executed. The backgrounds are gorgeous.
