Any chance of seeing Voxatron and the rest of your library on Desura? I know steam tends to reject games that are in alpha (like voxatron), but Desura actually has an entire section devoted to games still in alpha.

Hope you consider it!

ditto. I'm looking forward to my Humble Bundle. But I really like having the Steam & Desura codes.

I appreaciate the ability to install on Linux and Windows via Desure\a. I usually have to download them via Bittorrent when first available and store them until I want to play them (or re-install to play again.) As time passes, the Bittorrent feeds dry up. Desura and Steam really helps in this regard.

Thanks, Retro

Ah, I forgot that Desura had that Alpha section! Desura's definitely starting to redeem itself as a worthwhile platform alongside Steam. Ain't nothin' better than crazy indie games. Where else would you see a voxel-based 3D Robotron-style sandbox platformer? :D

Indeed. When I asked Zep about it previously the answer was:

"For sure, Desura looks great. In the past I've had trouble getting distributors interested in my games, but hopefully I can also smuggle them onto other services along with Voxatron."

So I was quite surprised that it wasn't on Desura as soon as the bundle was released. Hopefully it will happen though!

I would love to see this on Desura too. I know they deal with alpha games like yours because Survivors of Ragnarök is on Desura and it is more alpha then Voxatron.

I'd also love to see this on Desura. They have already expressed interest in supporting this game, so I don't see why not.

Never heard of Desura, on a scale of 1 to 100, 50 being Steam, what would you rank it?
Can you even compare it to steam?

P#3238 2011-11-06 08:59 ( Edited 2011-11-06 14:02)

It's similar to steam but mostly for indie games and mods. The client is a lot more focused on community interaction than steam is, you can see reviews and comments on every game as well as screen shots, mods, and videos. Also there's a Linux client.

It is however missing some features that are nice to have but not really required such as an in game overlay and chat.

@Jumbify
Well, that depends on what parts you comparing. I think, though, that on that scale you said, I could rank it, let's say... 38 or so. C+ to Steam's A. Details:

The library of games is... very different. Desura has a much smaller library, and fewer AAA titles. However, it has a large indie library, including many indie games that even Steam doesn't have. They've recently added an Alpha-Funding section for games just like Voxatron, that are currently in Alpha stage, but looking for funding. That's something no one else offers, and there are some interesting titles in there, like Project Zomboid.

It's generally a pretty capable service, though. Desura offers a lot of the same features as Steam, like groups and some of the other community stuff, though Steam of course generally has more features that are more fleshed out, and a much larger user base. Desura also doesn't have the crazy sales Steam often has.

I'd check it out, it's free and easy to use. I don't believe you have to install the client to browse the shop, but I may be wrong. If you do, though, there's no malicious code or adware or spyware or anything. If you've bought any of the Humble Bundles, most of them have had some games with Desura codes, so you could try out the service with that, or with one of the free games available on Desura.

If you try it out, tell the rest of us here what you think! I haven't used it all that much, either, so if you find something really good, or really bad, it'd be interesting to hear about it.

Double post.

Desura has a specific section for alpha games, so it seems perfect. Any word either way?
