It would be handy if the map editor gave the value (probably sprite index) of the current cell down in the status bar where it shows X:002 Y:015.

If it helps, you can use right-click over the map to pick the tile that's under the cursor. The tileset at the bottom of the map viewer displays the number of the currently selected tile/sprite index.

Seeing that info instantly when mousing over could occasionally be helpful though.

If one chooses to place user data in the map, it is possible a region of apparently black cells has different values in it. So each one must be clicked on to see what is in there. Instantaneous info would be far more helpful in that case.

Just tried this out, looks like you can just hold right-click while moving the mouse and it will keep updating the tile as long you hold the right mouse button. However, I agree it'd occasionally be nice to see that without holding a button, since it's not very clear this is possible, and there's free space on the status bar to fit this.

Also, I noticed you can't see the active tile selection unless the tileset is open. So you if you go to the "fullscreen" map mode, you lose the ability to see your current tile / tile under the cursor. But I guess you can't see your active tool in that view either, so... yeah, I dunno.
