-- Spotlight Lander Demo --

----- Arcade, Space, Classic -----

--------- Pico-8 game [0002] ---------

controls:

Up/Left/Right - Thrust

X - Restart

The Goal:

**Successfully land the lunar lander module by searching for the landing pad and adjusting your thrust to have a successful touchdown!

I created the game loop of this game by following a PDF tutorial resource created by Dylan Bennett and posted on his itch.io

description

This game took slightly longer to develop than my first Pico-8 game due to unavoidable personal reasons, however, I'm super excited to finally get it out!
I used the PDF tutorial to create the basic framework of the game then remixed it with original code and ideas such as the new sprite-work and the spotlight mechanic.

visuals

The visuals are very simple which I find matches the gameplay, in fact I did initially have more animations for the lander but I found that the game felt 'more cosy' without them. (if that makes sense?)
While programming the "Draw_Ground" function, that is where I had a lightbulb moment to add a spotlight mechanic where the player can only see the ground near the lander module. The effect this had was interesting as it spiced up the game by giving it more depth but also unnecessarily made it more aggravating to play because the ground could unexpectedly spike up and collide with the player, it was less fun to play. To remedy this I made the spotlight more of a visual mechanic then a gameplay one by allowing the player to see the unlit ground in a darker less contrast-y colour to the background which made the gameplay more forgiving! Perhaps in the future I could experiment with adding in objects that can only be seen when the spotlight is shining on them?

I am a solo developer for this demo game and I mostly focus on environment art, but wanting to expand out into all things gaming that I find interesting! You can always find more about myself or get in touch by clicking on my Linktree which is linked in my Lexaloffle profile or on the link below:
All feedback is welcome through my discord!

My Linktree

With more time and experience, I would've loved to add more gameplay and interesting visuals to the game, however, that goes beyond the scope of this project and I'm excited to move onto my next Pico8 game!
Thank you for reading :D
