I don't know what the game wants from me, but the keys don't respond to the notes at all.
use the d-pad / arrow keys to hold down the correct note and then press (O) to strum when the note crosses the line at the bottom to play it.
if playing on a keyboard, you can also enable keyboard mode in the menu which switches the controls to A/S/D/F for the notes and the up arrow for the strumming
