Nice variation on the classic. Would be nice to have an third consumable appear from time to time that could be spawned underground.

A few bugs remaining, all linked to changing directions and eating fruits.
In the screen-shot example, the bug is caused by emerging from below into a fruit and backtracking.

Controls can be improved:
When you want to do a quick u-turn, when going right, you'd press down and left in quick succession.
What often happens is that both direction presses occur during the horizontal move of the snake between two tiles, and the downward move is cancelled by the left move, resulting in backtracking and snake death.
Ideally, both down and left flags should be saved, and when the head reaches the next cell center, it looks what options are valid : in this case, the snake would see that left is backtracking and save the move for later, and move down and clear the down flag. Assuming no new arrow presses occurred in the mean time, after reaching the next cell center, the snake would turn left and reset the move left flag.
