p8rt_ios

p8rt_ios is a wasm module that can be wrapped to create iOS companion apps for the Lexaloffle BBS. It is offered as a way to create alternatives to the BBS web player, which currently suffers from audio and fullscreen issues under iOS.

Apps that use p8rt_ios are able to open the BBS in the default browser with a cookie set so cartridges played from any BBS web page it will jump back to the app. When used to play a cartridge that looks like a BBS cartridge, a link in the pause menu to open that thread.

p8rt_ios is compatible with the standard PICO-8 runtime and will be updated along with future versions. It will not support scoresub() however, or any other features that require user login.

p8rt_ios may only be used to create iOS apps that are free of charge and do not contain advertising or paywalls. See license.txt in the archive for a full list of restrictions.

Why Not a Lexaloffle Companion App?

It is likely that there will be a Lexaloffle-made app in the future that uses p8rt_ios, but in the meantime I'm glad if other apps like Pocket8 can step up to fill that role. If a Lexaloffle companion app does become available, it will still be possible for users to choose which player app to use and to switch between them.

A Lexaloffle Android app is also planned, but the web player and binary wrappers already work quite well, so it doesn't make as much sense to add something like p8rt_android into the mix.
