The Jam Focus was &ldquo;Racing&rdquo;. The game was not forced to be a racing game, so I wanted to do something inspired by MINIT. The optional theme was &quot;Escape&quot;, I used it for the story. The three diversifiers where : &quot;Four Color Palette&quot;, &quot;Animal Characters&quot; and &quot;Mouse only&quot;. I did use the two first ones, but I left the mouse only rule out. I used Pico8, because I'm obsessed with this engine.</p> <img loading="lazy" style="margin-bottom:16px" border=0 src="/media/82317/26_s&eacute;parateur.png" alt="" /> <h2>Devlog</h2> <p>I decided to do the jam when it was first announced, but I only started working on it on Thursday (November 14th). I only worked on it a few hours, but I worked a lot more on it on Friday. I was elsewhere on Saturday, so there was no work that day. I worked a little bit on Sunday. I just created the Itch.io page and wrote a good chunk of dialog. I thought so many times that I did not have enough time. But I pushed through ! And I did it. I'm satisfied. </p> <p>For the creation itself, I knew what type of game I wanted to do. I was envisioning a MINIT kind of game, with mostly story, a little puzzle, and a timer. I created a small map, every assets... But at this point, I had no story, only a time loop. I started writing (time was running) and the story kind of wrote itself. I was so rushed, I just wrote the first things in my mind haha. I struggle to keep my code clean. I mean, my code is always awful, but I try to keep things in order. In the end, I just wrote code, whatever it fit. You can change the sprite, edit the character... The only constraint is to give a link or at least name this tool somewhere.</p> <p>My ultimate goal is that people can reuse the cart and change the sprite sheet to create their own character maker. Currently, everything is a mess, so it's not really easy to change things with this tool. But I will try to make it as easy as possible in the future!</p> <img loading="lazy" style="margin-bottom:16px" border=0 src="/media/82317/21_s&eacute;parateur.png" alt="" /> <h2>What's next?</h2> <p>I want to add some things that I did not have time for during the jam. Here is a list :</p> <ul> <li>More sprites</li> <li>Adaptable sprites (Right now, if you select certain ears or body type, you have white spots or akward spacing. I want to prevent this from happening.)</li> <li>Code easier to read and more efficient</li> <li>Export as a Picotron sprite (I have currently no clue about how to do it... Picotron is quite new, there is almost no documentation... So it was a struggle for me. I thought doing a doll maker was an easy project. It was not. Thanks to really kind people on Picotron's Discord, I finished everything I wanted to implement before the end of the jam. I had a rough time managing my time too, between my work, my family and my friends... But I'm so happy to have almost finished this tool. If you want to help me improve the code, let me know. The theme was &ldquo;Create a mini-game about audiovisual creations&rdquo;. Because I did not want to create a game with a camera flying around and shooting lasers, I chose to do a Schmup (Shooting game) based on Captain Harlock (called Albator in French). I tried to be as close to the original design as possible with the Pico8 limitations.<br /> This project was fun to make. It was not easy, for sure, but I think I managed to do something great.
