Canyon Crisis

Made in 2 weeks for #LOWREZJAM 2023!

Play as a cowboy amidst an alien invasion! Run through an endless canyon, saving cows, shooting aliens, and trying to stay alive in the canyon heat!

Controls

Arrows – Move character / change menu option
C – Fire gun / select menu option / restart level
P – Open PICO-8 cartridge menu
(within PICO-8 menu) arrow keys & ENTER to navigate menu

Game Features

Stamina system! The bar on the right indicates how tired you are from the canyon heat! You lose stamina every second just from how hot it is. Additionally, taking a step or getting hurt by alien attacks also reduces your stamina. Pick up the pink orbs dropped by barrels or aliens to refresh yourself!
Ammo system! Your revolver can only hold 6 rounds at a time! Refill it by collecting ammo packs found on the ground or in barrels.
Rescue cows! Aliens are hungry for beef and will explode near cows! Run into cows to score points and put them safely in your pocket.
Endless canyon! As long as you can beat the heat, the canyon just keeps going!

Get that high score!

Challenge yourself to survive as long as possible and rack up those points! Take a screenshot of your results and brag to your friends about how awesome you are.

Picotron 240p mode?

The other day I pasted together a mockup to see what Picotron could look like on a 4:3 CRT monitor, see photos below.
I noticed the display spec for Picotron says 480x270. @zep, Have you considered allowing other video modes, like 320x240?

Improved hit feedback on the Swarmlord.
Added wings to the Swarmlord.
Updated title screen with Swarmlord animation and other minor tweaks.
Added sway to the background spores.
Fixed a bug that could cause an auto shoot right after starting the game from the title screen or when restarting from the game over screen.
Some sprite optimization and cleanup.

Special weapon combined with shields, which replaces the extra lives.
Special weapon, new function: fires 3 bullets at the cost of one shield.
UI for extra lives removed (replaced by shields).
UI for special weapon removed since they’re now represented around the ship (they are the shields).
UI hint for special weapon moved to bottom left corner and got some new graphic.
Boss speed adjustments.
Boss bullet speed adjustments.
Special weapon now destroys enemy bullets on impact.
