There are three kinds of blobs: green, red and yellow. While you do have control of their initial position, blobs move on their own in one direction, which depends on where they are facing. Clearing blobs decreases the timer and increases the completion meter by a certain amount - which depends on how many are cleared at the same time - and filling the latter levels you up. The game lets the player create combos - mainly through chain reactions - which increase the score. The tracker uses both standard PICO-8 buttons and mouse input; while the arrow keys are used to move across the grid and the O/X butons (Z/X keys) are used to cycle through notes, the mouse is used to control the instrument and playback options. While the PM synthesis Modul-8 uses is very basic, it still allows you to craft some interesting sounds by controling the volume, ADSR and frequency multiplication of both operators. Tunes created with the tracker are always looped, but the overall lenght of the track and the loop point of each pattern are adjustable. </p> <h3>File Format</h3> <p>Despite the confusing nature of Modul-8's text-based file format, tunes can be saved very easily. Pressing ctrl+c after saving is needed on the BBS and pressing ctrl+v beforehand is mandatory if you want to load a track. To keep your saved files, you'll just have to paste them in a word processor, or you could even share them here! Each piece in the game features three segments which correspond to the colors red, green and blue in that order. When these segments get combined after placing them on top of each other, they form different colors and eventually white blocks, which cannot be modified. Filling a line with white blocks clears it, but be careful! While the game runs, there's a constantly increasing meter that fills the bottom row with garbage blocks when it gets filled. When you complete a line, the meter gets reset, and the more lines you've cleared, the faster it fills. What's the highest score you can get? It allows users to create instruments by mixing two sine wave operators in different ways and create melodies with them.</p> <hr /> <p>Controls:</p> <p>All actions are controlled with the mouse cursor/touchscreen, except for playing notes. To trigger a note outside of play mode, press (o) - z on the keyboard - and use the d-pad/arrow keys to change the note that you play; left and right changes it to the previous and following one respectively, while up and down switch octaves.</p> <hr /> <p>Creating instruments:</p> <p>PICO-Patch features four types of sound synthesis: phase modulation (PM), amplitude modulation (AM), ring modulation and additive. The &quot;ADSR&quot; parameters allow you to modify each operator's attack, decay, sustain and release respectively. The &quot;V&quot; meter controls the operator's global volume, and the &quot;M&quot; parameter defines the multiplication of its frequency. </p> <hr /> <p>Using the sequencer:</p> <p>This tool's sequencer has a note range that goes from C-0 (bottom) to B-3 (top). At the bottom of the note sequence, there are two rows; the first one lets you insert a silence and the second one allows you to make the note that is playing stop. Aside from the play/stop button, there is also a loop setting, which controls the position where the melody loops. Playback accuracy might vary depending on the version of PICO-8 or device being used.</p> <hr /> <p>Save and load system: </p> <p>Instruments have an array-based format almost identical, although shorter, to 4OP-8's, with each item containing one of each operator's parameters, except for the first one (header) which is used to check that the array is compatible with the editor.
