We are holding our next big PICO-8 giveaway event in April!

This time we are holding a Game Design Jam on itch where participants can win a PICO-8 license just by planning and designing the game they want to make!

Starting April 1st and running the whole month, we will provide a template document to make it easy to write down the game ideas and plan it out in detail. Open to all ages and experience levels!

Nerdy Course - Side Quest 2

Side Quest 2 is broken down into 4 requests from the same villager. You first come across this Side Quest in "Lesson 6: Print to the Screen" and are encouraged to revisit it after learning how to use variables in "Lesson 7: Variables & Data Types". You are free to submit both examples under this post, but you should make it clear whether you made them with or without variables.

2-1
"Hi, I have a clothing store and I need a sign that shows people our fabric color options. Can you print the numbers 1 through 15 but in those exact colors for me?"

2-2
"I also do custom jobs where I can design someone's name into the fabric. Can you give me some ideas by printing your name, one letter at a time, in a really cool pattern?"

2-3
"I love books, and I dream of making a fabric that has a whole story printed on it. Can you print a short story, that fills the entire screen, and all the text stays neatly on the screen?"

2-4
"If you're feeling ambitious I bet you could fill the whole screen in text but this time, use letters and symbols to create a whole picture. It would take a lot of work, but it will look amazing!"

Community Shared Pixel Art Canvas!

Community Shared Pixel Art Canvas!

We invite everyone to add sprites from your own games or from PICO-8 games you love.
It will even be used as the r/PICO8 subreddit's banner!

It is on EveryoneDraw.com, an infinite canvas that is shared globally for free. It uses the full PICO-8 palette, and has minimal UI which is nice to just get started without needing to learn how to use it. However there are no drawing tools, so everyone is forced to place one pixel at a time, making the drawings that much more impressive.

When drawing in a browser, it sometimes forces you to pause because of the timeout feature to cut down on bot attacks most likely. Understandable but it can get frustrating.

It also has a limited color palette, just the 16 default PICO-8 colors.

I highly recommend downloading the app if you plan on contributing to the mural. You will get short ad breaks, but not often. The real benefit is you'll be able to paint pixels quickly and access all 32 PICO-8 colors. It works especially well on tablets with a touch pen for maximum pixel arting comfort!

The app also has a bookmarking feature, where if you find a location you want to return to often, it will remember those links and you can jump directly there.

Caution:

Griefing: It is a shared online space, and we do not have moderation tools, so bad actors are known to deface projects. There are moderators though that I can reach out to if that happens.

De-syncing: I have found that the website seems to perform better at staying synced to live updates, whereas the app could show a space as empty and two people could be unknowingly drawing in that same space. So I like to have the website open to see a more accurate live state, while drawing in the app on my mobile device. When I see the app getting out of sync, I fully close and restart the app.

Rules:

No words or symbols of hate, profanity, or NSFW content.
Only add, don't remove or cover up what is already there. You can add in the spaces between art already there, just check first that your sprite fits within before you start. To be safe, pick a space outside and the mural will keep expanding outward.

(When creating the subreddit banner, I may edit the mural to condense everything closer together to fit more art, so keeping a little padding space between art will help me do that. Don't feel the need to squeeze it in yourself.)

Made for the 2024 Advent Calendar collection of holiday games, toys, and fun tools made in PICO-8.

How to Play

Move around with the arrow keys.

Press X to perform actions.

Win Goal:

Survive and protect gifts long enough (?)

Lose Conditions:

Health at zero
Gifts < 5

Highscore & Speedrun

You can rate your quality of success by the number of gifts you protect by the end, as well as the amount of time it takes to reach the end. You can take a screenshot with Ctrl+6 during the win scene to share and compare.

Attacks & Upgrades

Candy Cane Cyclone

A swirling spiral of sharpened candy cane shanks cuts enemies in a minty maelstrom.

Upgrade 1: Increase number of candy canes.
Upgrade 2: Increase attack damage of each cane.
Upgrade 3: Increase the orbit radius and speed.

Peppermint Projectiles

A punishing blast of peppermint power that kills baddies but leaves them smelling minty fresh.

Upgrade 1: Increase number of mint shots.
Upgrade 2: Increase attack damage of each mint.
Upgrade 3: Decrease the cooldown between shots.

Reindeer Rampage (A.K.A. Slay Sleigh)

Call in the cavalry charge, sworn to plow and protect.

Upgrade 1: Increase number of reindeer & attack range.
Upgrade 2: Increase attack damage.
Upgrade 3: Decrease the cooldown between calls.

"Good day to you! I am a tapestry weaver, specializing in the embroidery of emblems of noble houses, which they often request on banners and such to hang on their castle walls. However, I'm not so good at the design side of things, and with many adventurers finding their fortunes and elevating themselves to noble rank, they come to me asking for new emblems for their families.

So I'd love to have many many banners on display in my shop walls for them to choose from. I have made 3 blank banners already for you to design house emblems on. Emblems can be anything. Some people prefer minimalism, while others are looking for familiar recognizable items such as weaponry, the sun, moon, flowers or animals.

What do you say? Can I count on your good graces to lend me a hand in this? Just imagine my shop walls filled with a variety of banners, vibrant colors and symbols everywhere you look. Thank you for helping make my dream come true."

"I'm a cartographer, a map maker that is. And I've heard you're quite the adventurer. I'm collecting maps of dungeons from all over the kingdom to help other adventurer's survive. I have all the supplies, scrolls, pens, and ink. I just need you to draw what you remember from any dungeons you've explored.

All I need is an outline of rooms and corridors. Oh and it would be extra helpful if you could label the map either with words or symbols.

Please make it as detailed as your memory allows. I'll accept any map by the way, even if it's not a dungeon! Maybe you've explored a magical forest or a dragon's den.

Nerdy Course - Side Quest 3

"Hi, I am the local alchemist, and I've had a stall in the market, but I'm upgrading to a full shop in town and I need shelves to display all 16 of my potions! I've got my shop sign already and all the potions are ready to go, I just need you to help decorate the shop and display them nicely.

This is how the shop is prepared for you, and I've cast a levitation spell on the potions you see. You can move them around yourself, or just leave them be and build something like a bookshelf like this for me to place them on.

You can change the floor design, the wall color, and make the display as fancy as you'd like. Just make sure I still have my sign and all 16 potions on display.

Thank you! I can't believe I'm going to have my own potion shop!"

Controls

Story

A young hero, fueled by dreams of becoming a revered paladin, embarks on a quest that will test his strength and intelligence. Inspired by tales of the Sunforged Knights, he eagerly undertakes the arduous trials that they administer and judge. Success promises not only rank among their esteemed order but also the rewards of riches and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

How to Play

There are 62 rooms. Use the items in each room to kill the monsters and exit as efficiently as possible. Resources are tight, but you may be surprised at how you can use them to make your heroic escape.

Evaluations and Rewards

After successfully exiting each room, you will be evaluated on your efficiency and rewarded diamonds! The less moves and actions you make to exit the room, the more diamonds you get. Collect as many diamonds as you can to reach higher ranks in the Sunforged Knights and become the greatest Paladin they've ever seen!

Items

Use the O-Button (Z or C on keyboard) to swap between your items. Each room has one or more items that you can use to kill the monsters, but they will be taken from you before you begin the next room.
You will always have the winged boots of swiftness that carry you as far as you can go in any direction. There are 3 possible items that you can pick up and use:

Sword: Swing it in any direction to kill a monster next to you.
Shield: Run with the shield in hand to bash things in the room.
Bow: Shoot an arrow across an entire room. You only get 1, so retrieve it to shoot again.

Monsters

Don't worry, we've selected relatively harmless monsters for these trials. They stand around looking menacing, but as long as you kill them quickly, you shouldn't have any problems from them even when you are staring them in the face.

Pico-View Prototype #11

This prototype was made for Pico-View, a monthly web-zine hosted on NerdyTeachers.com.

This month's prototype is named "Simon's Skull". It is a template for building your own game similar to the original Simon game/toy.

This prototype has a couple interesting features to learn from:

1) Custom Color Palette; using a mix of the default and hidden colors.
2) Game States; A clear separation of the computer's turn and the player's turn.

The game has the same rules as the original, where you listen and watch the buttons being played by Simon (the computer) and then you have to repeat them back in the same order. Use the arrow keys to play the pattern. We added our own theme to the game by making it look like a skull and crossbones and that can be taken farther such as using this as a minigame for unlocking chests in a main pirate themed game.

Beyond just playing this game, we encourage you to take on the challenge of building your own version by creating your own Simon-like game where the player must memorize and repeat a growing sequence of buttons.

Pico-View Prototype #10

This month's prototype is named "Candlelight Graveyard". It is a lot more developed than I usually make these prototypes because I wanted to add that Halloween theme, and probably got carried away. I try to just pick one style, mechanic, or function and focus on that each month, but this game has a few:

lighting of the map using pal() swap and clip()
sin() and cos() for rotation of candles
fillp() for drawing the grass light effect
vertical levels using the full map for easy editing

I also challenged myself to use only 2 buttons in preparation for the 2-Button Jam happening next month. So for controls you only move left and right, with either arrow keys or O and X. The right button is also the action button to move on to the next level.

There are 8 levels total (0-7) and watch out for the last level because it has a real tough twist! So share a screenshot if you manage to beat the whole game!

Beyond just playing this game, we encourage you to take on the challenge of building your own version by creating an action game where the player controls multiple objects that rotate automatically like our candles.

You are a geneticist isolated from the world on an island rich with specialized genetic material, perfect for crafting the ultimate being, whether that means for good or evil is up to you.

In order to grow your homunculus and tailor its traits of virtues or vices you must complete 3 phases of the game several times.

Phase 1 - Gathering

Explore the island and gather the plants that you want. Each plant provides the genes connected to a specific virtue. Find the clipboard in Laboratory Room 1 to learn which plants hold the key to which virtues.

Phase 2 - Sequencing

Enter the first Laboratory Room and bring your plants to the computer. Select the plant with left and right arrow keys, and select the row of DNA with the up and down arrow keys.

Each row has a + or - symbol next to them. These determine whether a virtue placed in the row will increase or decrease in the homunculus. You may even see a doubled increase (++) or decrease (--) of the trait. It is a good idea to view this screen and make plans before going out to gather.

Set the plant genes to the currently selected DNA row by pressing X. The set genes from your inventory will be moved to the top of the screen and cannot be undone.

You can trash any remaining plants in your inventory by pressing Z while still in this computer.

Phase 3 - Stabilization

After setting the sequence of all 6 plant genes in Phase 2, you will be directed into Laboratory Room 2. Use the computer that now says "Ready".

Press X at the right time to stop each row of genes. If you can stop them on the light green indicators, then the stability of the DNA will increase. If you miss, then the stability will decrease, depending on how far from the targets you were.

Get a stability rating of 80% or better to have an accurate change in virtues based on how you set them in the Sequence. Unstable DNA will still be injected, and may increase OR decrease that virtue and in unpredictable amounts, regardless of the Sequence. You may sometimes decide to take your chances with mutation when you don't like the sequence variation.

Check the Condition

At any time, you can check the condition of your homunculus by clicking X while near the tank and clipboard on the wall. This shows you the current amounts of each virtue. A strong virtue will be farther to the right while a strong Vice will be farther to the left.

There is a threshold of where a virtue is considered strong or weak. Each virtue can be strongly negative, weakly negative, weakly positive or strongly positive.

When you have fully grown your homunculus, the screen will read "Wake". Review the condition clipboard one final time before waking up your creation and revealing exactly what type of being you made and if you achieved one of your missions.

View your clipboard of missions at the main menu screen. These are saved across multiple plays so you can return to try to check them all off.

The missions are the biggest puzzle of the game. Can you figure out which virtues are required to achieve each mission? Most require 2 specific and strong virtues or vices to be satisfied. Angel and Demon are the exceptions.

There is a hint to help you get started somewhere on the island if you can find it.

This game was made for the A Game by its Cover Jam 2023 and based on the My Famicase Exhibit 2023.
