"A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. And a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto ...
Choose between Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby to explore this virtual adventure game inspired by the work of H.P.Lovecraft."

Controls : Arrow keys to move, 'c' or 'v' to interact
Music can be turned off in the menu ('enter' key)

I wrote a (long) post-mortem of this project : here
This is a small "demake" of Alone in the Dark. You can explore and find your way out of the top two floor of the mansion. I tried to keep it close to the original, but there is no fight (if you see an enemy you will die) and the interaction system is simpler. The 3D meshes of the characters are ripped from the original game.

I used a plugin I made to export meshes from Blender with color per triangle and I modified a mesh stripping sample from coder corner to load, strip and convert meshes to character strings. You can find my version (to use with Visual 6) here.

10/10 - Would get eaten repeatedly again

Seriously, fabulous work, very good homage. I felt I'd properly gone back in time.

What did you create the assets with? Hand-written verts+curves or imported?

@NuSan this is absolutely GENIUS!
I used to LOVE playing this on the PC in the early 90's.
How you've managed to squeeze all this into the PICO-8 is pure magic to me! Congrats!! :)

@zep I'm glad I finaly put the effort to make the two characters fit in the same cart. It's much better like that. I was also struggling to make everything fit in ram when using 0.1.6 but 0.1.8 saved me by doubling the ram capacity. I was forced to destroy and recreate only what was needed for each screen. Now I still need to do that, but it's much easier.

Any chance of some kind of post-mortem on this? Would be great to find out how you've managed it and how it renders! Really nice!

P#25044 2016-07-10 12:11

::

Everyone has already said it, but this is truly incredible.

I'll second felixmreeve's request for some kind of post-mortem, would be really interesting to read!

P#25085 2016-07-11 08:04

::

Thanks for the kind words, I have started writing a (long) post-mortem, and I will try to finish it and publish it in a few hours.
Making this game was quite a long journey.

P#25086 2016-07-11 08:45

::

Ok wow. This is cool. Really good gameplay too.

So when are you going to do a remake of Little Big Adventure with this engine?

P#25091 2016-07-11 10:42

::

Yes, I would love doing an homage to Little Big Adventure 2 ! It was so cool you could simply recompute the background from the camera whenever you wanted. This will fit the limitation of my engine, but it's quite a lot of work ...

P#25092 2016-07-11 11:01

::

Ok, I finished my post-mortem of Alone in Pico. If you have any questions or advices, you can post theme here :https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=3804

P#25098 2016-07-11 13:06

::

That would be fantastic!

Just let me walk around citadel island on the pico 8 and that would be perfect!

P#25099 2016-07-11 13:32

::

This is by far the most impressive game i've ever seen in PICO-8, congrats!

P#25104 2016-07-11 14:49

::

ditto everything already said :D

P#25129 2016-07-11 22:54

::

NuSan, this is super impressive and inspiring. I'm amazed. Congratulations!

P#25140 2016-07-12 05:49

::

Yes, that's so impressive and a little bit humiliating ;) It took me (and 6 other persons) 2 years to achieve (almost) exactly the same result... 24 years ago!

P#25508 2016-07-18 17:09

::

@UrbanMonk not yet LBA, but there is Twinsen: DarkLBA pico-8

P#25509 2016-07-18 17:15
