Wow! This looks and feels amazing! An instant add to my pico-8 library! I can't really find any criticisms yet but I haven't played through it much either. The controls feel very reponsive, the sound effects feel solid with the hits. It could use a little more music/ambiance but man, this is good stuff!
I'd like to see a character select and some female dudes to play as. I'd really like a few more moves, like holding punch to throw and some sort of desperation move (A+B) that takes away health but damages around you 360. Just classic moves found in these old beat 'em ups!
I've got a few things left to add. Music definitely and need to tart the graphics up a bit here and there. But i'm going to leave it pretty much as is other than that. There is a back punch I started working on that isn't very good at the moment, so I might possibly turn that into a 360 attack.
I'd certainly have added some girl characters to this, but it was sorta part of the "meta-ness" for the game jam. A kind of throwback to those 80's days where every other game was a couple of all-american white dudes beating up ninjas!
I've actually got plans, after having fun and learning alot making this, on a superhero beat em up. More Double Dragon/Final Fight style thing. That'll have a larger moveset, customizable characters and some RPG elements.
You can fly kick (z+x) and theres a back punch which is (opposite direction and x). Had aspirations for alot more, including weapons, but I think i'll probably that for my next beat em up now.
I'm looking forward to doing the music. Some really thumping eighties arcade tracks will be really fun to come up with. Also want to do a rocking version of the tetris theme for the Trump-tris Wall level.
I'll look into the digitized voice thing... That would be pretty funny! The level transitions are pretty dull at the moment...
Very good indeed!
Couple of glitches/bugs:
- you can jump your way through the level. You should split the levels into section where you have to beat a certain number of baddies
- bosses are missing a 'safe' timer after being hit. I am able to beat the first boss by cornering him.
- bosses health can be negative (it renders outside of the box!)
Cheers for the bug/glitch info... I didn't get much playtesting in, particularly the bosses, which I only stuck in on sunday. The latter two are a quick fix as I've already had to fix these probs for my main characters.
I knew about the first one (which was very useful when I was playtesting levels) I might add some stop/go bits in to counter that, I was searching for something more err 'organic' or whatever... Like parts of the level design that meant having to fight to get through. Holes in the ground for instance... But couldn't really get a good idea formed in time.
It seems like there are a bunch of bugs related to level restarts or continuing. If I reach the boss and lose a life and then reach the boss again, sometimes-but-not-always the game will trigger the level ending. If I hit the "wrong" button to continue, it shows the message forever after. I think there was some less noticeable stuff along the same lines but I've already forgotten it.
sweeeet game. Oozing quality. That jump kick is super fun to use, and i love finishing a combo. My only niggle - could we get some visual indicator of impact besides the "ouch" face? Like, a flashing sprite or a little 1-2 frame impact sprite would go a long way to selling the hits. Very cool!
Really good. The original "Bad Dudes" does not have the opponents immediately jump up to the next level the instant the player does.
Instead they "lose" the player for a bit and give him a chance to grab power-ups or what have you.
I must say your combat is good. Plays more like Mighty Final Fight.
