My first Pico complete game.

Procedurally generated levels

In game instructions

TextBox utility function: define text box location. Word wraps text passed to it. Control codes for changing colors, centering text on a line, and newline.

Nice job. I used to play Rally-X incessantly. Feels great.

I have a request, though. The way I remember Rally-X, you could "pre"-turn. Like, if you're on a long strip going towards the right, and there's an intersection ahead, you could push up on the joystick and, even if you let go, it'd go up when you got to the intersection.

(I think Pac-Man did the same thing.)

Was there a hazard? Like, rocks, or oil, or something? Maybe a bonus, too, like nitro or something. Man, I can't remember. :)

Nice to do this one! I played the original too and have New Rally-X on a plug and play unit.

There needs to be a slight pause or you press a key before going to a new level, as it just jumps to the next one instantly once you finish one.

Yes, there were rocks. The bonus was a special flag, making all flags double afterwards when you grab them. There was also a challenging stage where the cars wouldn't move and you could freely collect all flags.

Hey, I know the Game, and I like the Pico-8-Version. :) Really nicely done.

Thanks for the comments.

I went from memory on this. Were rocks essentially just road blocks? But maybe they don't show up the mini screen? I like the special flag also. Will see about adding that.

Interesting. In this one you can already be pushing in a new direction but you need to hold it. I will see about implementing the pre-turn thing.

I did put the wipe effect in but adding a pause seems like a good idea.

I just realized I was saying Rally-8 instead of Rally-X. :) My memories are in tatters, I swear.

I found an online MAME with it here:

https://arcadethunder.com/classic-games/rally-x

Easy way to jog your memory. :)

Looks like I was partially right and partially wrong about the pre-turning. You can do it, but only just before the intersection. I think this is basically just to give the player more room for sloppy movements. If you do it too far before the intersection, the screen actually budges over a little, and then back, I guess to register that you did it, but that it won't work.

Ms. Pac-Man did it similarly, where you can turn just before the intersection and it'll turn when it gets there, but not if you do it too far before:

https://arcadethunder.com/classic-games/ms-pacman

It's probably just a "last requested direction" variable with a countdown timer that resets it to "none" when it hits zero.

V1.2

Updated to include a gold flag that doubles points of flags. The gold flag does not show on the mini-map so it takes it takes a bit more effort to find it.

Added the ability to pre-select a direction. Does not time out. Clears when turn is made. Seems to work fine. Not sure if it adds to playability but it may.

Added a Press X to begin new screens.

Oh, I definitely like it better with the pre-turn feature, thanks! :)

Next idea: I think the enemy cars were slightly faster than yours. That's why you had the option to puff out smoke behind you to stall them.

I love the idea of an RNG mapped Rally-X btw. More challenge and re-playability.

Yes, along with destroying your car if you were to run into them.

But maybe they don't show up the mini screen?

Right; like with this one, your car, the enemy cars and the flags (regular) were all that showed up.

I like the special flag also. Will see about adding that.

Thanks, along with the pause for finishing a level!

The oil slick is my replacement for smoke. I may mess around with slightly faster red cars. Also, I'm not sure if this was in the original, but the red cars corner just a little slower in Rally-P8.

What is RNG mapped? Are you referring to the procedurally generated levels?

Rocks will be in the next update.

Yeah, that's all I meant. The procedural generation vs. static maps.

Wow, this is a ton of fun! Very Ms Pacman-esque. A less wordy tutorial would probably be helpful to new players, but other than that, I had a great time with it! Great job. :)

Cool thanks for sharing your game. Also reminded me the very nice Midnight Building on MSX
