Updated Version with some bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and a new "victory point" mechanic. You can now buy laurel slots from the merchant which will give you 1, 2, or 3 victory points to add to your score if you manage to kill the dragon.

A dragon has been terrorizing the kingdom! Will you be the one to slay it?

In this "slot-builder" game, you spin the slot wheels and choose a row.

You can then use the icons on the row in whatever order you please. Coins can be picked up and used with a merchant to buy new spaces on your wheels. The merchant will sell you bigger and better coin choices, wizards that can destroy slot wheel spaces (but not the dragon!), furnaces and metal for forging swords, and even completed swords.

But watch out! When you select a row with a dragon icon, it will breathe fire on you, and you will lose health. Run out of health, and it's game over! Use your swords to destroy all the dragon icons on all wheels to win the game.

I really like this game. Clever spin on an RPG!

Nice game! It's simple but deep at the same time. I really liked to think about strategy in this game and playing it was pleasuring. Thanks!

It's a great "spin" on both RPG and deckbuilding! I would love even more complexity in it, removing single gold coins etc from the rotation and maybe more tile types. Nevertheless it is a great idea for a game!

With 5 spins to go, I managed to slay the dragon!

I've been playing this a ton since I first discovered it.

This game has some serious fun factor going for it. I'm really hoping I'll be able to win this this time around.

Not a fan of slot machine games because they are just 100% luck based but this is quite an exception because the player can choose and have a strategy. Best slot machine game ever! =)

Really cool little pool building game. I thought it was going to be all luck to get the last dragon but when there's only one left you can actually time it pretty easily.

I just spent way too long playing this one. Took me a bit to figure out the gist and to know what I was needing to do but once I did, I just kept going.

Took me a bit to realize that the gold I had to spend on a merchant was the coins I had on my currently and not just gold in the bank...which means the gold in the bank isn't good for anything?

P#36620 2017-01-24 22:07 ( Edited 2017-01-25 03:07)

Yeah, it is a standard mechanic in deck/dice/pool-builder games that got popular after Dominion (cardgame), that the gold not spent this turn is "wasted"

I guess, you can treat the total gold like a score. I know, I do ;)

P#36623 2017-01-24 23:03 ( Edited 2017-01-25 04:03)

Gold not spent is not wasted at all, to spin the wheel it costs 1 gold coin.

P#36624 2017-01-24 23:38 ( Edited 2017-01-25 04:38)

True, but the merchant gives you one gold for free if you need it, so it doesn't really affect the gameplay that much.

P#36627 2017-01-25 00:12 ( Edited 2017-01-25 05:12)

I guess I wasn't paying attention that spinning cost a coin - makes sense. I never got close to ever running out of coins so was always secondary. And there's a spin counter but there's no penalty or limit, right? It's just there for stat purposes it seems.

One thing that I'm interested in is thoughts on what's the goal of this game? Is it to earn as many victories as possible or kill all the dragons?

The in-game suggests your "score" is victories, which means you don't really want to kill all the dragons, right? I played last night and kept 2 dragons in but loaded up on victory tiles. I ended up with like 80-something victories before I died.

I guess it's however you want to play but still...

P#36652 2017-01-25 11:15 ( Edited 2017-01-25 16:16)

@morningtoast I think the goal is removing all dragons. And the secondary goal is to earn as much Victory as possible before killing the dragons or running out of spins/HP. So that's your 'score' you can try to beat (since Victory handicaps you by splitting your focus away from things that destroy the dragons.)

P#36655 2017-01-25 11:28 ( Edited 2017-01-25 16:28)

Actually running out of gold is a very serious problem you can run into if you use the Merchant Spam strategy.

?Define "Merchant Spam":

Timing your initial spins to land on as many merchants as possible to buy... more merchants. Why? This makes a clear visible blue line appear as all the merchant heads fly by when the wheel spins, this makes it very easy to time completely safe spins. To build on this you can just place coins and iron and furnaces and such between a barrier of a few merchants on each side so you can safely miss them with little consequence but also it helps with the timing of hitting them. The problem with this is if you're not careful you will run out of gold only buying merchants.

Gratified to see people playing and enjoying my game. Glad you all like it. Thanks for playing!

I really enjoyed making the game. PICO-8 is a wonderful little development environment.

Great little game!

This was an absolute blast. Thank you for making this!

Slot building game. What a concept. I love it.

I'm getting pretty good at winning. Now I need to figure out how to maximize my score.

P#142934 2024-03-14 19:16

@nephilim
Very nice game. Was trying a new strategy to empty a column with wizards so that I'd ideally only have one sword left in it... And it crashed the game...
