How to Use

  1. Choose a day on the shelf (Today or in the past)
  2. Draw your sprite
  3. Click save to place your work on the shelf

Editor Tools

Pencil

Draw pixels into the sprite canvas with the Pencil.
(Right click to pick a color!)

Fill Bucket

Fill in areas of pixels with a new color.

Line

Draw a straight line between two points.

Square

Click and drag to draw a square or rectangle.
(Hold shift for a filled version)

Circle

Click and drag to draw a circle or oval
(Hold shift for a filled version)

Pan

Click and drag the sprite to pan it around.
(Or Pan the image one pixel at a time with WASD or Arrow keys)

Copy / Paste

Copy your sprite and paste it elsewhere like the Picotron GFX editor, PicotGram Social Media, or right into the Picotron Code editor.
(Also use CTRL-C and CTRL-V to copy & paste)

Clear

Erase the whole sprite (Be careful, but remember you can still undo)

Undo / Redo

Undo changes to your sprite. (Once saved, your changes are permanent!)
(Also use CTRL-Z & CTRL-Y)

Resize

The sprite sizes you can choose are 8x8, 12x12, 16x16, & 24x24. Making the sprite small is destructive to your sprite so please be careful. Some changes can be undone but it's wonky.
(12x12 is Wash's favorite)

Sprite Name

Click the orange RSS button to get today's @PixelDailies daily challenge!
You can also just type into here yourself to give your sprite a custom name.

Palette

Left click to select a color to draw.
Right click to set a Quick Color. Quick Colors can be quickly picked by pressing their corresponding number.
Up to 9 Quick Colors can be set

Preview

Preview what your sprite will look like at 1x magnification. Sprites look different on different colored backgrounds so click the +/- ticker to choose the color you like best.

Replace All Color

Hold CTRL and click a color to replace every instance of it

Save

Be sure to save your sprite so it will show up on the shelf. If you've made changes and don't like them though, you can click close and they won't be saved.

Exporting/Sharing Sprites

Clicking the share button will open the share window and allow you to customize your sprites before you export them to PNG (GIF exports coming soon!)

Days to Export

A range of sprites can be exported. Choose the first day in the range and how many days after that you want to export.

Range Presets

There are some preset ranges you can use for quick sharing. Remember you can still adjust the starting date.

Display Options

Choose to display the sprite's Theme, Date, or a nice Card behind it.

Custom Colors

Customize colors of the background, text and card.

Thanks for reading this far.
Leave a <3 if you enjoyed Sprite Shelf and I hope to see your sprites on PicoGram!

You put in a lot of work into this. It's an awesome little app! I look forward to messing around in it some more.

Super cool idea! And thank’s for the shout out <3

@thesailor - It was your gifs that fueled me, ngl

@369px - Deserved! PicoGram is so fun to use and I'm impressed by how many updates you drop

ITS FINALLY HEREEE :D

It looks great! I was looking into a https://pixelart.academy/ (EA on Steam) recently and automatically thought that it would be a nice fit for Picotron. Sprite Shelf nicely reinforces this idea, it's cuteness is exactly what Academy creator were tying to achieve. I wish it could have some optional tutorials and/or technique hints published together with the theme of the day.

I'm no artist, but this is such a great idea I'm gonna give it a go!

I'm getting close to a bug-fix release and would love any input on issues you currently have with Sprite Shelf.

Current Bugs:

  • Fixed: Sonetimes right clicking the editor will redo the contents of the topmost layer of the undo stack
  • Fixed: "Today" bobbing animation gets jittery after being open for a long time
  • Fixed: Tools (line, circle, square) can't draw color 0 (x)

I'm getting a bug where Sprite Shelf crashes if I try and paste a sprite into it from the sprite sheet. Is it meant to be able to accept pasted sprites?

@Andom - It's supposed to let you paste a sprite it. It may be a size issue. What is the size of the sprite you're trying to paste in and what size is the sprite set to in Sprite Shelf?

@washburnello it's a 16x16 sprite originally imported from PICO-8.

This is the paste output:

--[[pod_type="gfx",region_w=2]]unpod("b64:bHo0AJEAAAAKAQAA8xp7e2JtcD1weHUAQyAICATwDwxgDFAcYA8PYAcsZmxhZ3M9MCxwYW5feAgAy3k9MCx6b29tPTh9LDsA-wEQDGAcIAQQDw8wBBAHIAQgQAAc-wdQHEAsQAwADEAPDwAMYAxgAVARUAEMRQAc-wsHDBAEIBwABDAsDw8wDAAEQBwEQBxQHFAsQEkACVBtPTh9fQ==")

I'm not sure that helps, it looks like some sort of crypto hash to the sprite itself.

The error is attached

The sprite size in Sprite Shelf is 16x6.

UPDATE: It seems to be a 2x2 matrix, and if I try and convert it to a 16x6 sprite in the Picotron sprite editor it just blows it apart. I think this might be the problem - you're expecting a single 16x16 sprite but you're getting 4 8x8 sprites.

@Andom - That makes sense. Sprite Shelf doesn't support importing from Pico-8, but I should try to clean the string up better when pasting it in. Thanks for the follow up :)

I like this a lot, even if I will forget to use it. Have a Morshu sprite attempt:

--[[pod_type="gfx"]]unpod("b64:bHo0AGwAAABqAAAA8FtweHUAQyAQEARATyAvEmAPID8bHxIPIHAOTxsOcB4PDwUtDnAODQ8ZBS0OgA4NHA0OgA4PGzkLDmAODQtJHlAODRkLKQ0OUA4PHxkLKQoOYA4ZCykOcH6ADkQOgA4UDhQOcA4UDiQOYI5A")```

I love this, thank you so much for making it!

What is the time window for the "streak" icon? I live at UCT+9, so Pixel_Dailies prompts often update when it is already the next day for me... :-P

@caranha Re: The date when you click save needs to match the date that PixelDailies released the prompt.

It sounds like I need to add something to account for timezones.

Also, nice sprites!

Amazing! Apps like this really flesh out Picotron's character. I'm absolutely going to use this for pixel dailies!!
