In Lil Kobold's Big Stew, you play as a little kobold who needs to collect special ingredients for his big stew.
This is my 15th proper game since last October and I'm really happy with how this one turned out.
Happy Halloween!
You could put out a multicart of all the games. Adam Atomic: The Bleep Bloop Year.
Happy Halloween to all!
A fun game - I managed to get the first ingredient into the pot. Looking forward to coming back to this when I have more time
This is phenomenal! I liked it so much i decided to finally make an account just so I could star it!
What a wonderful game! I think this would unironically be a very fun game to speedrun.
@Adam Atomic , That was great. I think I'll replay it to see if I can use the logs to reach a space to the left of a screen I don't think I managed to reach otherwise. Maybe I'll find some easter egg there.
I thought about porting the game to puzzlescript... Core mechanics would be doable, but the "undo to last map change" feature would be extremely hard to implement. Undo step by step would be easy, essentially built in, but that would make the backtracking extremely cumbersome and easy to overshoot.
What I might do instead, if you don't mind, is add saving to the game.
Recent PICO-8 changes allows for 4 cartdata spaces to be used at once, so it's 4*256=1024 bytes for the save.
Not sure that would be enough to store a compressed encoding of the undo object.
If that not enough, maybe some always out of sight parts of the map could be used as extra save space with cstore ?
If all else fails, there's the cumbersome save to clipboard/load from clipboard approach in the pause menu.
EDIT :
Replayed, and the suspicious arera was indeed reachable. Was hoping for either a passage to the right of where the goblin is in the screenshot, or a destroy-able tile two up one right from where the goblin is. Alas, the area is just empty, and the cleanable green spot tile in it just a red herring... Not sure if I want to try every ingredient and tool on the second cauldron now, or just give up...
Another suspicious place is the mushroom that seems to block the exit in the screen south of the hub. Maybe there's an alternate ending and you can put a mushroom in an empty bottle, for example ? ...
EDIT 2 :
Looked at the rules part of the code, cauldron tile and grey mushroom tile 25 are part of no rules, so no interaction possible. Thought I might have missed some with pink mushroom, eye or empty bottle, but no. Diagonal movement is also properly disabled, so I guess I've found every secret already.
@Adam Atomic
I've been replaying Lil Kobold's Big Stew, trying to find extra challenges.
Most ideas were impossible to achieve (clear every green goop/spider web/flower, go against the flow, collect every seed,escape the map...) but I found two interesting ones :
- Wrong cauldron
A bit long, some backtracking due to over-killing of needed flies, but not too hard. - win with no remaining lily-pad
Very hard, requires heavy use of the two optional obscure mechanics that let you fully clear lily-pads/spore tiles.
Potential third I haven't tried yet is to bring a seed to the 2nd cauldron. Solution might need too tedious going around the map in big circles to clear soil tiles to be fun to do, but the route planning should be fun regardless.
EDIT :
1st seed was done without clearing any soil and was fun to plan the route.
2nd seed was done with 1 soil cleared with items, minimal map circling and very fun long windy path planning
3rd seed was done with massive circling and the use of another seed+knife to clear a soil tile.
It's probably possible but extremely tedious to clear that soil tile with items and massive map circling, unless I missed some parity related impossibility, but I won't do it. Brought the final item for the screenshot instead.
@Adam Atomic
I made a mod where you can save mid game (including the last 128 undos) , have auto-save when you deliver the first three ingredients, and get a soup potion appear in the 2nd cauldron room if you destroy all lily pads. How would you like me to publish it (or not) ?
