I suck at coding so if someone wants to take that on, hmu. Otherwise, look forward to this being finished in 18 years.

Looking at the entire game, I MIGHT be able to fit all of the graphics and 'map chunks/boss chunks' without having to do weird user mem area swapping, it'd just require a specalized 'map chunk sequencer' to construct stages.

Here's as far as I've gotten thus far...

The maps would be highly necessary to fit all of the boss graphics in for sure...but a lot of it repeats...there's also all the heads, which apparently in the original rom, a couple of boss heads swapped out small bits to create new faces.

I happen to have a made a pretty robust 'map chunk sequencer' for projects just like this, if you're interested.

@JadeLombax

Lifesaver, you are. Perfect.

Playing around with the map editor and finally 'getting it' and how to do stuff with it via code now, I put together something more akin to the arcade backgrounds, with parallax. I think knowing how the map editor works, I can maybe shrink the tileset further. Also of note, I redrew a lot of stuff with 'anti-aliasing' (insert sprakle animated gif from 1998 internet)

Still exploring this one. Not sure if this will be a full straight port or maybe like...just 'making fun levels' with the controls/physics/game elements of the original.

idk...still just wrapping my head around the junk I've accidentally put together thus far.

Always nice to see more of these types of games on Pico-8. Very excited to see more of this awesome little project!

For anyone curious, there was another version of this game that was titled "Wonder Boy."

The graphics are pretty sweet and very faithful to the original. Amazing job!
