I’ve been trying to run pico-8 carts on a new Anbernic RG40xx cube handheld device and although they run they crash when trying to access the menu commands (and some also crash mid game). The message reported is ‘NO CARTS FOUND! PLACE P8 CARTS IN SDMC:/P8CARTS/‘

I have installed the pico-8 raspberry pi files and tried just about every permutation of folder but nothing fixes the problem because it seems the pre installed pico runtime ‘fake08’ takes over (I. Hope this makes sense). I have tried removing this program but it is reinstalled every time I start the device. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Did you ever get this working? I'm new here, but I just finished getting Pico-8 running on the CubeXX. Happy to try and troubleshoot.

Hi dead-feather, thanks for replying. No I haven’t been able to resolve the issue, the only suggestion I’ve come across is to install a custom firmware but I’m not really sure I want to attempt that as some pico programs work sufficiently well for my enjoyment.
Seems to me there must be an easier solution as there are so many recommendations to use the CubeXX for pico8 I can’t be the only one having this problem and I thought someone would have worked it out by now. If it’s not just me being stupid perhaps it will get back to Ambernic and they will issue an update.

Okay, right off the bat, I am working with MustardOS, so my experiences may not be directly applicable. but I'll share just in case.
In my case, I had Pico-8 in the right spot on the SD card, but prior to getting it there, I had opened a cart and the system defaulted to fake08, and I wasn't able to get it to change until I reset my system. Doing so allowed me to select what bios to open the cart with. It could be worth trying a reset, provided you've got your files backed up.
Also, I don't believe Pico-8 works from inside Retroarch, so make sure you're accessing it from the spot with the rest of the consoles (game room, i think).

Hi dead_feather, yes I have tried a reset but it didn’t fix the problem. I can run pico games, it’s just that they crash if you try to access the game menu. I guess I should install a different OS but I’m getting a bit long in the tooth and just want to keep things simple these days 😳

Hi again, I’ve just attempted another reset and realised it’s not doing a hard reset. I’ve tried the reset button on its own and with the power button but I’m still only getting a soft reset and as far as I can see there’s no menu option to do a factory reset???

Hmm, I'm sorry to say that I'm fairly out of my depth when it comes to native Ambernic firmware, since I pretty immediately switched to a different OS.

No problem, thanks for the suggestions anyway. Perhaps one day I’ll be brave enough to change the OS.

I recently got cube xx, and also faced issues with PICO. My issues were specifically with Splore not working well.

I could only solve it by downloading newer version of OS, and flashing it onto system SD card (left one). Sadly even after that, some limitations stayed. Like you mentioned, "No cart found" issue on restart, no ability to bind trigger keys (at top, L1 R1 L2 R2), remap keys (swap A and B buttons), not being able to go to sleep with PICO running, and a few more.

Only real solution I found was to switch OS.. I lost many of emulators and games by using Knulli, but I would guess they can be installed if I put in the work. But since I got console mainly for PICO, I didnt mind too much.

On Knulli my experience has been great so far. Very very little to complain about, and things I dont like I am slowly finding they are all configurations.

One thing in Knulli I was excited about are saves (ability to have 2 separate states - me and my gf), but I couldnt get this to work yet.

If you are worried about things going wrong when installing new OS, my recommendation is to buy separate SD card. If anything goes wrong, you can always put-in old ones, to have stable Console.

And a small trick, when it seems like console doesn't want to boot-up, just hold reset button for 3 seconds, and then start button for 3 seconds. I got scared I screwed it up, but this made it boot-up again.

Feel free to ping me if you have any questions, I can try and help to the best of my knowledge.

Hi meldiron, thanks for the comments- using a separate SD card sounds like a good suggestion.
