bbs//scan
bbs//scan will ignorantly try to load carts from bbs by their #id. It takes advantage of the LOAD(#id) function to try to guess a valid cart id. Most of the time you will get a "Download Failed" message, but sometimes you hit a valid cart id and find a fantastic game on the bbs! Its like splore if it only had a "feeling lucky" mode ... and most of the time you aren't lucky.
Use the bbs//scan button in the start menu to return to the bbs//scan tool and keep searching.
This scan found the cart "pentatoy - experimental music grid thing" by cardboard_box at #id #46197
bbs//scan automatically saves successfully loaded carts into a history list. This history list is 90 carts long, with the oldest hit falling off the list. ❤️ed carts will not be removed from the history list. Saved hits can also be deleted by holding 🅾️.
Every scan builds up a comprehensive index of results stored in files called: .bbs_scan_n.p8. These files store a couple of bits for every id in the search range. You will only need 4 files (0-3) to store an index counter for the default search range, which should cover nearly all carts for the time being. The bbs//scan tool will not repeat a dead #id, so in theory the probability of a scan getting a hit should increase as you use the tool.
Use the up and down arrows to select between rng selection, +, or - to increment up and down the id list.
You can also randomly select from all hits in the index to instantly launch a random game you have discovered with the bbs//scan tool.
Start Menu
Use the scan//settings to change the min/max scan range
Use the scan//stats to view the statistics from all the #ids scanned so far.
Updates
1.1
- Input IDs (#90459 is a cool effect)
- Scroll all hits in comprehensive index
- Filter by favorites in history view
It occurs to me that if a bunch of people use this at once it might DDoS the BBS, is there any kind of rate limiting or anything?
Default is one second between queries can be changed in the settings. I imagine it is no worse the hitting "new" or "search" in splore
