Is the PC Leela from Futurama?
It's possible for paths to appear directly behind the player which can make it a little unclear how many nodes are right next to you on the crucial first move. Maybe increase the distance of those near connections?
Hah, no the player isn't Leela. I was trying to depict a pair of glasses, but everyone seems to have that very thought.
I'll have to change it.
As for the character overlapping lines, I used to have a feature in which pressing a button makes that character disappear and a circle indicating the range of things you can jump to appears. It's still sort of in the game, but it's not working as intended at the moment. I'll try to get back to it.
