The enlisted have arrived! Properly trained! Will follow commands just as you tell them. No stupid ideas! The war will be won by following chain of command! Let's conquer that hill...

This is my third Pico-8 game, loosely inspired by Lemmings. You are in charge of guiding a squad of marines to capture and bring back the enemy flag. They will only do what you tell them, for better or worse...

This is a mouse cursor game, but you can also use the virtual mouse cursor with the keyboard controls. It is possible to finish all missions without losing a single marine, but that will require some precision maneuvering and luck.

My previous Pico-8 games are Picopolis (2017) and It takes four to party (2017).

Changes in 1.1

  • Added a hover to more clearly show which obeyling you are commanding
  • Added a ladder preview to help placing ladders
  • Added a crate puzzle to mission 3
  • Minor tweak to mission 5 to fix flag getting stuck in the wall
  • Updated puzzle on mission 9 to guide players away from hopelessly trying the wrong solution... kinda :)

Here are some hints to the different missions.

1 -

Obeylings drop the flag when you command them. Let another obeyling bring the flag back.

2 -

You can move a shielding obeyling by giving it another command.

3 -

In order to complete this mission without KIAs you need to let one of the enemies climb past yours.

4 -

Requires some precision grenade throwing...

5 -

Ladders can be destroyed by grenades.

6 -

No good hints here

7 -

Ladders can be stacked, but avoid that ladder on your way back. Also, the proper jump timing is about at the back of the chair.

8 -

Pick off grenadiers where possible, jump up the hill, good luck!

9 -

Use shielders to approach the sentries... and maybe think outside the box har-har-har

Cool

PS: the sound the turrets make when they die is so sad :(

Having fun so far, great game.

Your tweets about Picopolis are what got me into PICO-8, I've been having fun ever since. Thanks Jeb!

Very cool indeed.
Nice spin on a Lemmings-like mechanic. 🤓👍

Okay, as a Lemmings fan, this game is fantastic.

You know Jeb, you should consider making video games for a living. ;>

Thanks for all the nice comments!

@HeyNetters well... with 400 people working on Minecraft I still need my own little corner to play with :)

I would love some help with music for this cart though...

P#76788 2020-05-17 20:26

Hehe that's a good start. Maybe I can build on top of it?

After a lot of fooling around with the editor I managed to make these passable music loops.

and...

[sfx]

I'll sleep on it and maybe add them to the game soonish.

@Happysplats13 Thank you! I ended up not using your other song partly because I wasn't sure how to copy it and partly because I realized I needed to learn how to use the music tools myself :)

If you want to try to make a night tune, I suppose the theme I'm going for is marching band drums and tuba? Night tunes could be more calm though?

P#77161 2020-05-25 06:48

@jeb Yeah for sure! Should hear back from me in a couple of days! I have a couple ideas, should be a bit longer and i'll actually post it in the comments so it should be easy to copy it. Excited! :D

P#77162 2020-05-25 06:52

Thank you @Happysplats13 !

I think this song feels a little bit "random" in notes and I'm worried that it will be too distracting from the game. Maybe try to find some smoother melodies?

P#80174 2020-07-31 15:56

oh yikes... Ok well criticism is welcomed, Ill see if I can get some buddies of mine or something to see if they can help me out a bit. Was there any specific part that you found distracting or was it just the entire thing in general?

P#80181 2020-07-31 21:01

Sorry, I didn't intend to sound harsh. I'm not very good at making music myself, so I'm not very good at giving pointers, either =)

I won't be able to do anything this weekend, but maybe later I can see if I can make an edit to explain what I mean.

I appreciate the help!
