Created for the Pico-8 Advent Calendar 2018.

Alpine Alpaca

Hit the slopes and score as many gates as you can. Use your cards to steer and build your deck as you go!

Controls

arrow keys - choose card
x/z - use card

That's all there is to it really! Every third gate you pass you can add cards to your deck with various effects. Maybe speed up and get more points? Or even dare to use the jump card? Experiment with cards and obstacles to get the most points.

Good luck!

Feedback is appreciated, let me know in the comments. And post your scores too! :D

I agree. I'd use the left one in backgrounds, and the right one in foregrounds or cinematics.

haha I love the kind of early 90s aesthetic; it really seems to go well with skiing, for whatever reason :D

It all looks and feels (and sounds) great! The alpaca is cute :>

The only thing is that sometimes the camera feels a little bit slow to react to the card previews maybe? It's not too bad though. Cameras are tricky :p

Thanks! Nailing the aesthetic was one of my goals - happy to hear that it worked.

The camera tween operates on a small delay to make it less jittery when browsing the cards, potentially this delay could be made smaller. A matter of taste I guess.

This game is the best Pico8 game so far, hands down.

P#60013 2018-12-15 15:13

Omg this is a gem, I played only 3 times but once I paused the game and came back later, and I couldn't see the menu on the right

Another time, I reached like 30+ points (so a bit long game) and the menu disappeared too

Plz fix it and this is one of the best game on pico atm

  • Also when you learn "speed up" it's written bombing
  • I once got deviated by a tree trunk to a small rock which put me back on the tree trunk, weird
  • How to know which way a small obstacle will slip you to? (left or right)

max score for now:

  • 35 + 273m
  • 47 + 333m

Thanks for the kind words!

I've updated the game now so that the UI doesn't disappear. Also the stumps always bump to the same direction, and the rocks as well. I added a graphical arrow to show this.

Enjoy!

(My best is 64. :) )

The title screen colors remind me of Cyrus and Reese from Animal Crossing. I love that combination of colors. :)

I'm having a great time with this cute cart. Max score is only 25 for now, but I'm working on improving! You've hit on a really fun mechanic with the cards.

P#60557 2019-01-04 03:44

Yes, If you added more possibilities and more randomness in the obstacles (a Yeti showing up, an avalanche etc) it could be a stand alone, it's a really really good game (check out that game that started on pico8 and was then a hit)

P#60571 2019-01-04 14:52

in fact what i'd love (but would require more game design) is to have some sort of campaign to complete, a second mode with goals to achieve

and this mode which is like a flappy bird endless mode

Thanks for the feedback all! I think I ended up a bit over 8k tokens so I’m not so keen on digging around in it. :)

Yes! A meta game would work great for this game. Totally agree. Imagine collecting some sort of item while skiing (sometimes forcing players to choose between gates and items). These items would then be used to craft extraordinary power ups etc.

P#60603 2019-01-05 19:39

And what's the point of the card count on the bottom right?

P#60622 2019-01-06 16:14

It’s how many cards that is still in your deck before it gets reshuffled. Only useful in very specific occasions. Like if you’re in a pickle and only have a few card left in your deck, then if you get to choose a new card, it is more likely to show up soon which could influence your choice. Writing this I realise it is a super ultra mega edge case. But still.

P#60628 2019-01-06 18:35

I fell in love with your game. You nailed the aesthetics and the UX feels so polished. Great job!

P#61031 2019-01-20 16:11

When I see a ski game, I often thought a real time gameplay ski game.
This one is different. A turn based card ski game. Very creative on combining a ski game with turn-based card game.

Great job :D.

P#68258 2019-09-29 18:09

A turn-based puzzle based upon a normal high-speed arcade and quick reaction game. Love it ! Starred and favorited !

P#68265 2019-09-29 23:28

Here's my best score:

One of my most played games on pico-8. My only complaint is that it tends to get brutally difficult once you hit a score of 50-60.

P#92116 2021-05-18 11:17

Cool game, although it's a bit difficult.

P#93269 2021-06-09 20:53

My score is only 4, XDDDDD

P#93277 2021-06-09 22:30

One of my favourite games for the Pico-8!

Such a great game! Plus, you could turn this into a card/board game where the slope is made of tiles of gridded cards, and you move your alpaca with the movement cards that you have, and as you move down you randomly place more tile cards down to make the board/slope bigger.

P#96583 2021-08-28 22:15

you had me at alpacas.

P#97428 2021-09-17 01:44

A skiing alpaca... and you play the game.... using movement cards? An amazing idea!

P#106140 2022-02-01 18:37

What a game! The game core is such a novel idea and then you throw the alpacas in. The whole thing is just beautifully executed with so much polish!!

Utterly amazing!

P#106201 2022-02-02 09:26

Hey all, thanks for the great comments. Glad to hear the game is being put to good use!

P#106202 2022-02-02 09:45

wow

P#133680 2023-08-29 10:35

This was the first game on PICO-8 which showed me how capable this
platform is. Such and great idea, gameplay, and design - top notch!
This was, of course the beginning of my love for the wonderful games
by mister Peitz. What an amazing output for a single person.
