while exploring an internet hole the other day i began reading about chromadepth glasses. It got me thinking about being able to get "pop out 3d" effect in pico8 and voxatron without needing to do any kind of Anaglyph effect by only using the colors at the proper "depths" as described below

their description:
"The ChromaDepth glasses create striking 3D images from normal 2D images by pulling forward the color red to the foreground and sorting the remaining colors according to their position in the rainbow. ROY G BIV! (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet). The ChromaDepth process encourages fantastic 3D illusions without compromising the quality of the image when viewed without the glasses."

i can personally vouch that these work even with glasses because a few smoke shops ive been to sell them with giant fabric wall scrolls

Chromadepth Glasses if anyone is interested

i think crayola used these around 8 years ago

Cool idea. I'm interested to read someone's experience trying them with the PICO-8 palette.

i think il order a few of the cheapest ones, and order a few "pro" and see which works best, worst case il hand them out as a holiday novelty

Thanks @VgBlade for opening my eyes to the (previously unknown) world of Chromadepth. Had no idea this was a thing. Last I knew was the old red/green 3D glasses.

I too would be very interested to know how well the PICO-8 palette fairs in this spectrum. Either way, I may also put a pair of glasses on my Xmas list, just in case! ;)

Necro post but the glasses worked pretty well for me if everything was single colors, but as soon as a sprite had a pattern in it the "depth" would get a bit hard to follow especially when the colors "depths" we're not "next to each other"
Example would be a blue and red checkered pattern would be both close and far

Hopefully on topic, @VgBlade. About a week back I was wondering if anyone had done anything in Pico-8 with the classic 3D glasses ? That is the RED and BLUE lenses.

These ones are clear lenses that somehow make specific colors appear at specific "depths" on one end of the spectrum red seems to float above the page, while blues seem to sink into the surface. The oldschool colored lenses just use separation of outlines in different colors to create depth, the only way I could think to make the old style work is with single color vector graphics then figuring out the offset for each depth plane you need

The old 2 color style also has issues if people's eyes don't focus the same, and to me at least the double outlines are pretty garish without glasses.

A game designed around this kind of 3d glasses would look perfectly normal to anyone without the glasses on, color choices may seem a bit odd if they are not seeing the depth though.

To be quite frank I found out about these glasses at a smoke shop selling wall tapestry's paired with the glasses. I liked the effect enough I spent a week finding the manufacturer. At the time I was in denial about needing glasses and the effect worked perfectly for me where other effects were meh at best(cyan magenta for oldschool, polarized for modern 3d films)
