Redid the animation and decided to upload it here if anyone's interested. Thanks again to enargy for the font mechanic :)

Perfect.

Now all we need is for someone to make a full-on Sonic clone in PICO-8! :D

@Liquidream: Seconded! :P

awesome!

hey just one thing -- I didn't actually make that font. it's called Gaslight: https://fonts2u.com/gaslight-regular.font?ptext=EMERALD+HILL+ZONE+1&submit=Submit

all I did was make the ttf-style stuff so that it could be used in pico-8.

It's a little backburner'd; but a little Sonic demake was a thing I'm concocting; but it may be a little over my head. I was gonna do one zone per "cart," over a total of 15 carts, where the map is nothing but setpieces of the levels, and a level can be dynamically or statically generated (maybe a mode for each) from the setpieces (since the original games kind of do that anyhow)... and maybe some modifier where sure, you always start off in Green Hill Zone, but depending on some factor (maybe your completion time/frames?), it'll kick you to a different set of levels.

The idea was to have every level take 40 seconds to a minute to complete, and then you'd go through maybe 6 of the total 15 of them. No boss battles (maybe just a final boss at the end).

It might even be possible to make more than 15 zones by using color variants (like Mystic Cave/Lava Reef being a Purple/Blue and Red/Orange offset with different widgets?)...

The layering thing/loops is gonna be the tricky part though.

fyi for anyone wanting to take it further...

the physics for 2d Sonic are pretty well documented if you need somewhere to start: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_Physics_Guide

A Sonic demake would be fantastic for PICO-8!

Technically speaking it's much harder than Mario to program, though. You've got varying degrees of slopes, loop-de-loops, different layers that Sonic can be "in", rings to disperse if you're hit that need to bounce... there's a lot going on.
