So I recently rediscovered the magic that is Puyo Puyo! However, I'm absolutely terrible at it. I'm a pretty slow thinker and can never analyse the situation quickly enough to predict the fall of blocks and construct large chains.
So, I wrote this little training tool that allows you to play Puyo in single-player as slowly as you like! You can spend an infinite amount of time deliberating each move, and even go upwards.
Threw in some sfx and autotiling for fun :)
- configurable rotation controls, mainly for those using the web player on mobile devices
- the 13th row (outside the top of the board) is now treated correctly
- chain text can't go off-screen (animation fix)
- revamped menu / settings
- fixed nuisance puyos not popping (oops)
- added 'blind piece' mode which greys out the current piece, forcing into the habit of looking ahead
- the first two pairs can only consist of red, green and blue puyos, regardless of colour count
- puyos placed outside the top of the board will be removed (hopefully correctly)
- improved controls some more
- adjusted purple puyo graphics (thanks to MissingNumbers for input!)
- optimised the way puyos are stored (no more lag when the board gets full)
- can now choose the number of colours to play with
- can optionally play with random nuisance puyos added to the field, to simulate an opponent (for all you people that complained it was too easy)
- improved controls, fixed some bugs, now possible to fail
lol, I have a tetris in the same state (zero gravity). every time I try to work on it, I end up just playing it like it is (and sometimes I lose, for shame) there are good tetrises on pico8 already, so I intend to do something else with it (think tetris plus or joyjoykid, but something else). well, at some point it's bound to happen :)
anyway, pico8 needs a puyo puyo (*), and that's a good start, so please do a full game!

Ah ! I wrote a game like this years ago. I called mine, "Poyoppu." There you go. :)
Quite similar but had power-ups and password levels. You need to let the bricks fall and not float as they are now, that's where the challenge comes in. Determining where to place them as they sink to the ground.
Also when you lose, don't just exit immediately to the main menu, no, let the game tell the player what their score was and possibly a password to try this level again but at a reset score of zero.
You could also have 3-chances for the player, one gained every 2-3 levels. Levels are gained by each time you zap bricks. And for each level you already start with a stack of Eyebricks below, higher and more variance for higher levels.
In mine I set it so you had to get ALL the bricks cleared to see the new level, but I also had a zapper that came down from the sky to destroy any eyebricks if you only had one or two remaining to make it easier.
In yours, you could just count the zaps, 10 for first level, 20 for second, etc.
I created an account for the sole purpose of expressing deep thanks for making this! I just recently got Puyo Puyo Tetris on the Switch and have been really into the Puyo half of it. After climbing the ranked ladder to about 3000 though I've finally reached the point where I can't kinda just bumble my way through matches and need to learn how to chain properly. Endless is okay, but as you said in the description, it's easy at these early stages to lose track of what I'm doing and mess up a whole session with a single misplacement. Having a "level 0" endless mode like this I think will be the first step to finally getting good at puyo puyo!
