Made this for Sophie Houlden's Star Trek Jam! It's just about playable, although there's plenty I'd like to change or add.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Map view:
Left/Right - select a planet
Z - travel to planet (this will cost the number of fuel displayed above the selected planet), or will beam you down to the planet if you have selected the same planet your ship is parked at
X - warp. If you have at least one green warp crystal, you can warp to the next system with X
Up - go to your ship's loadout. Swap your tools here or refill them
[having a drill is very useful for collecting crystals, it needs to be kept topped up]
The red matter will destabilise the current system, so don't spend too long in any system!

Planet view:
Left/Right - move Uhura around the planet
Up/Down - select a tool
Z - use the selected tool
X - duck
The eye in the middle of the planet shows you whether Uhura can be seen. If it is half open, you can use X to duck and become hidden.
Aliens will panic if they see you, which will damage the planet's ecosystem and conflict with Star Fleet's Prime Directive.
Tools will allow you to avoid the aliens or do better. The drill will allow you to drill rocks to gain crystals.
Some actions, such as collecting fuel drops or mining crystals produce sound waves. Aliens will investigate any sound waves that reach them. Even if you are hidden, they can eventually spot you if they are searching an area (show by a '?' above their heads).

Let me know if there are any major bugs, I didn't have much time to playtest while trying to submit!

Update: fixed bug in equipment screen where pressing X would crash the game if no item was selected.

Well that's pretty fun!

It makes a good game even without me knowing much of Star Trek, so that's a plus. I liked how the planets had different orbit speeds and this affected your fuel consumption.

Thanks! To be honest, I have no idea about it either. I might have seen about 6 episodes tops and so just ran with what I had it. Pretty pleased with the orbit stuff, I feel like map screens in general could be more interactive, so I'm glad that you enjoyed!

It does capture a lot of what makes ST and FTL fun, in a neat dynamic with the planets and away missions. Honestly, it's the part of FTL I wish they'd included more about. Simply brilliant. :)

Now all that's remaining is how to distinctify the solar systems, and make the choice between them informed and relevant. Also, is there a way to up your fuel capacity? I found myself at some times needing to repair/renew my gear and travel... but really, that's about the only forced-losing condition too.

Glad you enjoyed it, good points! Adding system variants is next on my list, and I need to fiddle with the balance. I'm taking a break after the submission and then coming at it fresh some time soon!

(balance changes include making it easier to find an item I think, so let me know how many items you found, I know that one person only found one from a whole playthrough)

My typical run (start to end) gives me about two apart from the standard Drill. I've gotten Cloak in both runs, Scan in one, and Read in another...

P#24773 2016-07-06 23:38 ( Edited 2016-07-07 03:38)

Interesting, I want to up that by quite a bit, maybe give you 4 or 5 per run. Thanks for the feedback!

Is there a way to utilize the other factions that Star Trek is known for? Maybe a good time for phasers (set by default to Stun; certain hostile scenarios switch them to Kill)?

Maybe tie the item discoveries to the more dangerous/hostile worlds, along with more fuel and dilithyium there - and then have nicer "recovery" planets that are less rewarding, but relatively safe and contain some items that boost your health/buy you some time...

Then the main difference between the sectors can be the distribution of those planets - more hostile sectors (IE: Klingon, Cardassian, etc.) mean more risky/rewarding planets, less hostile sectors (IE: Vulcan, Betazoid, etc.) may mean more safe ones; but each sector has at least one of each. Maybe a couple of wildland/unknown sectors in the mix, too.

Gonna take another look at this in about a week when I've got some time off, I'm planning on avoiding combat but definitely refining the generation and adding some risk. Thanks so much for the feedback!

So... there was DMCA's Sky... and before that, No Mario's Sky... but before that, there was THIS.

How's the refining coming along?

As an avid star-trek fan, I think this definitely has the feel for the show. Although curiously Lieutenant Uhura has seldom beamed down to a planet by herself.

Usually it is the faithful trio, Captain Kirk, Doctor McCoy, and Mr. Spock.

Here are 2 sprites I drew for Kirk and Spock:

Haven't worked them into anything yet though.

Yes, but the aliens are always pretty women, too. Or tribbles.

This game is really good. Challenging enough to replay it again and again, the design is very neat, in every aspect of the game. I don't know Star Trek at all, but I enjoyed what you did there!

P#29654 2016-09-29 04:20 ( Edited 2016-09-29 08:20)

I've poked around some at the numbers, didn't end up updating it here (although I will if you guys are interested!), and have made progress there but have found that I am no good at SFX, any volunteers for adding sound

P#29657 2016-09-29 07:37 ( Edited 2016-09-29 11:37)

Looking cool @dw817, I was thinking about adding more crew members, I think the sprites might still be in there for other characters? Make a game with them!
I decided to go with uhura exactly because it's a bit different to the usual! Thanks for the feedback everyone!

P#29660 2016-09-29 08:05 ( Edited 2016-09-29 12:05)

A slow Star Trek music could be nice addition...

P#29667 2016-09-29 11:31 ( Edited 2016-09-29 15:31)

The initial accident scatters a few crew members to the galaxies, and you pick them back up?
