I've seen at the lower end of the front page of pico-8 that it has "Discounted take-home licenses for individual students", How does one get a student discount for a student like me?

The blurb you're mentioning has a link to a page with more details:
https://www.lexaloffle.com/info.php?page=schools
That page gives most of the information you'd want, and includes a "contact us" email link near the end to actually request the discount.

I've emailed them last week and still no response from lexaloffle

I noticed zep has been MIA for a couple of weeks. He might be sick or on vacation, or maybe heads-down in crunch mode at whatever his day job is.
Hm, hope he's okay.
Edit: He tweeted a pic of seagulls on a roof 30min ago, so I assume he's okay, just busy.

I just bought pico-8 for the full price, been having a blast lately

i always assumed that you would need proof that you are an educator, and that the deal was to bulk buy it for the class.

I think you're right, @VgBlade. I think @skeltonmod would have needed to convince a teacher to buy one or more licenses.
That being said, the licenses for education are like 80% off, I think. I just tried to buy it and it said regular price is US$15, so that's just $3 per student license.
I'm not sure what @zep considers a minimum class size, but if enough of the students in a computer science class went to their teacher and asked if he'd order if they all pony up three bucks, I'm sure the teacher would be happy to do it for them.
In fact, a lot of teachers would be so thrilled to have interested students, they'd pay for it themselves.

@VgBlade if that's the case then I might not be able to convince my teacher to get a bulk license order since lua won't interest him the slightest. I bought pico 8 with it's regular price now, I might bring it at school and just convince my teacher from there.
~CHEERS!

I applied for educator status a little while ago, but not heard anything. Do you know how long this takes, as I am running a Pico-8 workshop on the 25th/26th April
DoctorMike

I am having the same issue. Have applied, emailed, twittered @zep, etc and have not heard back.
(edit: don't mean to annoy anyone/zep, just trying to get licenses for cub scouts I'm working with on game design/dev)

This seems as good a thread as any to revive, rather than spam folks with a new one.
I pinged zep via hey@ a few weeks ago now to ask about whether it's possible to buy a number of licenses to gift to people (low bulk order, 10-20).
Not strictly education so not looking for the discount, just the ability to allow the recipient to properly own the license and have it associated with an account and email of their choosing once gifted.
Does anyone know if this sort of thing can be done, or should I look for an alternative approach? I see mention of OSS alternatives to Pico-8, and that's great and perhaps if there's no other option, but I'd really like to pay back to Lexaloffle for the fine work.
(also, off topic, but the little "I am a human" game when registering is just too damned lovely)

Hi @skeltonmod:
Please don't forget that @zep now has Pico-8 able to work with online for free for teachers in classes and students everywhere.

Hmm, perhaps I made an error after all by hijacking a superficially similar thread - I just didn't want to be presumptuous and start a fresh one.
My use case isn't for education. I'm trying to bulk buy normal retail licenses for Pico-8 in a way where they're not bound to an email address at purchase, so I can gift them to people and they can register themselves.
From what I've seen, that just isn't how things work - no license keys or anything that I can find but I thought perhaps this was similar enough to the education case that there might be a path.
Is there no way to do such a thing at all?

I think you can buy through HumbleBundle and get keys to gift. Not sure about Itch. If you ask on Discord you may get an answer, I know someone who gives keys on their birthday (hobbit tradition 😉)

Ooo! Thank you! Looks like itch supports purchasing as a gift.
One proviso for anyone that is in a similar boat is that you have to supply the recipient's email address in the final step of purchase and the fulfilment URLs have that encoded within them, so you can't just buy anonymous licenses in advance and share them out like candy, you have to tie each gift to its recipient specifically. In my case, I think I can likely still make this work, but ymmv. (does also mean now that I have two licenses for personal use, but hey, it's an excellent tool!)
Also fwiw as of April 2022, seems like humble has stopped selling Pico-8.

Even if pico8 is not in the HB store, doesn't buying on lexaloffle go through an HB widget and ultimately give a key not tied to an email address?
(Congrats on your second license! With itch bundles, I am at 3 🐲)

Good question about going through HB bundle. My original purchase email thread does indeed begin with a HB confirmation with a key link, but without buying a third copy, I don't know whether that key link is tied to my HB account or whether it could be gifted.

I looked and there is a checkbox with a gift icon when buying on lexaloffle!

Also to clarify guys the current Educational version to date is completely free. No need to sign up or anything. Just run it and go.

I haven’t heard of a promo code, the two links given in this thread (license terms for educators and registration form to get student take-home licenses) are still active and seem to reflect the ongoing position of lexaloffle.
the online edu edition exists and is convenient, but here we’re talking about discounted licenses for the full program.

If you are a student or educator I'd assume you need to reach out from your school provided email
