A quick game made with @mithos (gfx) for a 2-button gamejam.
Z to jump / X to stick your tongue out and catch insects.

v1.1 added multiplayer (saved with PICO-8 0.1.1 -- update if you can't load it!)

Bit of a late reply but very fun little game.
I like the addition of multiplayer but surprised it only goes to two instead of four or six.
Would be a great game to show my little niece and nephews.

You could add more players if you split the direction inputs into two button controls.
S and D
E and F
Left and Down
Up and Right
It does handle as a keyboard so physically someone could make a six player set of controllers tied to one USB port (or bluetooth) keyboard input, providing it doesn't have any key limits. (shouldn't unless you gut a really crappy keyboard for it I think.)
This could be done in an arcade cabinet setup as well since the controls are often tied to keyboard input anyway and probably the better way to make a set of controls.
Maybe 3D printable frog shaped controllers, oh I need to draw up some plans for that now, sounds so fun to make. :3
Maybe an arcade cabinet plan too, for fun cause I can't get the idea of a huge six player arcade cabinet out of my head. :3
Only trouble is lack of a pause key or start button quarter insert input lol.
Could remove one or two players for that. (or add a start key to both gamepads ;P)
Then it could be regular gamepad compatible (assuming a Pico-8 console had regular d-pads ala NES style) using only two buttons on each d-pad.

Would remind me of sharing a gamepad like the Anticipation game on NES, good times.

It actually does support more than 2 players, but I haven't added the multitap code yet! (tentative plan is to support up to 8 full controllers by pluggin in 2x 4-controller multitaps). You're right though -- I could have just used the unused buttons from each player to add 4 more 2-button sets.

I skipped any 'press start' style menu so that many players can join and quit at any stage, allowing it be a kind of background party game for up to 8 players. PICO-8 will soon be compatible with Happy Fun Times, which allows using phone web browsers as many local multiplayer controllers without downloading any additional software.

It's tempting to add more stuff to it, but more PICO-8 games to make!

Ah that explains why it seems open for more than two players.

Well I was trying to tease about the possible addition of a start button in a pico-8 update but ya, the quick jump in system here works rather well and is great to have.

I'll have to look into this Happy Fun Times thing.
Maybe I can make virtual versions of my controller ideas for my own Pico-8 games that way?
I can't wait to see something like that implemented in Pico-8.

But ya, can't wait to see more Pico-8 stuff, keep it up! :3

I feel like 8 controllers MIGHT be a bit overwhelming.

Still though, it would be nice for large multiplayer games, but if I start making any PICO-8 games, my games will have 4 players max, because I'd probably go insane trying to make sure that players can see their characters... XD
