Can you bring the wolf, the goat, the cabbage, the hunter, the gun, the monkey and the washing machine on the other side !?
- You can only get one of them in the boat at a time.
- You can hide one object in the washing machine.
- When you re not around your folks will interract this way :
you can learn these rules by playing or read them by clicking the 'show' button
1 The goat will eat the cabbage.
2 The goat will eat the gun if the hunter is not there.
3 The wolf will eat the goat.
4 The wolf eat the monkey if he can't hide on the washing machine
5 The hunter will kill the wolf with the help of his gun
6 You need the gun to convince the hunter to come into the boat.
7 The monkey will turn on the washing machine and destroy its contents if not playing with the cabbage.
8 The monkey will throw the cabbage at the wolf if they're on opposite sides ( The wolf will flee )
9 You need help from the hunter to lift the washing machine.
<arrows> : move your character
<down> : grab or drop an item
<z> : fire with the gun
<x> : undo last move
Across the river is a remake of a game I made 2 years ago with Twine
My initial goal was to learn to make narrative games, but as you can see it was a failure ^_^
I was thinking the game deserve a more graphic version but was too lazy to do it, but now with pico-8 everything is possible in few hours :D
:: took me a while
I won! 27 moves!
hide gun, pick goat, go
grab monk, go
drop monk, back
grab gun, go
drop gun, grab goat, back
hide cab, grab wolf, go
drop wolf, grab monkey, back
grab cab, drop monk, go
drop cab, back
grab machine, go
drop machine, grab gun, back
drop gun, grab monk, go
drop monk, grab cab, back
drop cab, grab goat, go
drop goat, grab wolf, back
grab gun, make hunt go to boat, drop gun, go
drop hunt, back
grab cab, go
hide cab, grab monk, back
drop monk, grab goat, back
drop wolf, grab goat, back
drop goat, grab gun, go
unhide cab, hide gun, back
grab monk, go
drop monk, back
grab goat, go
drop goat, unhide gun
it was hard, thank you for the game
Lol I used a script myself to build the problem.
I was just changing small details in rules until I found a problem with a complexe solution.
I was not sure on how you could find a <27 moves solution so I went back to my old solver code and realize I forgot a part in both the Twine version and this one. The hunter must be "empty-handed" to lift the washing machine which means no gun on his side.
It seems difficult to implement a graphics feedback for this, as the hunter dont hold the gun when you're on the same side, so I guess I wont change the current version. I'll just set the new highscore to 25 :D
Ah. I did wonder how you came up with such a complex set of rules. Well it is definitely difficult enough already even without that last hunter rule. I probably sat over an hour altogether with my six year old trying to solve it before he got tired and I gave up and wrote that script. The animations are awesome. Pixel blood is fun! :)
A beginners version with a smaller set of rules would be a hit with the kids. I imagine one could even make up a longer story consisting of several stages, with more and more difficult tasks. That could ease players into it. Might make a nice phone app. But like all neat ideas, there probably are ten of those already. Ok, I am digressing. Again, good job, like with all your Pico-8 creations!
Geistvonpa, the solution works but MAN you have to really read it carefully. This kind of puzzle is MENSA quality ! Top notch difficulty ! Very challenging for the brain.
Excellent ability to rewind so you don't have to start all over.
I'll give you two hints (these are really needed to be known by everyone)
- You can put the RIFLE in the washing machine.
- The monkey HATES the wolf.
Other than that, it's common and comical sense. Think of cartoon logic and the laws of physics and there you have it.
