It's your average day working in the postal service. What better time to go out on deliveries when everyone is at work?

With over 10 exciting deliveries and a few detours in a "HUUUGE" city, there's no telling what you'll experience while being basically the worst kind of monster humanity has to offer.

Make sure to drive as recklessly as possible, or the roads will become so safe that people will deliver their own packages!

If you manage to finish this "difficult" "challenge", post your score in the comments!

===== INSTRUCTIONS =====

YOU NEED TO BACK INTO THE CAR BETWEEN DELIVERIES TO GET ANOTHER SLIP!

Arrows: Move person/drive car
Z (PICO BUTTON 1): Start game
X (PICO BUTTON 2): Get in/out of car

Walk up to people's doorsteps to leave them a note. There are two types of vision you need to avoid:

  • Car Vision: People will come out of their house if they see your car within their vision cone. These are large, usually come from the house and appear dark red when your car is not in them.

  • Person Vision: Some people are waiting outside for you! Yikes! These people have BRIGHT RED vision cones all the time and will catch you if you are within them, car or not.

===== KNOWN BUGS =====

Completing a delivery and losing on the same frame skips the next delivery. Very rare and may crash the game.

brilliant! can't wait to play more!

Super impressive! The music, graphics, and gameplay were all amazing, well done!

Thanks! I'm just hoping it doesn't fall apart too easily. :P

Just got a bug where the last mission skipped entirely. Not sure if it happens 100% of the time, but its pretty game breaking cos the last mission is the best.

EDIT: it happened when I won and lost a mission at the same time. the level is there! bug is hard to repro, so not sure if it justifies a post compo fix

Great game ! You're demonstrating the full potential of pico-8 here. And the fact that you did it in 48 hours make it even more impressive.

Nice take on the LD theme too ;)

Awesome job! I like it so much, but still can't beat it, I am so lame :D

Wow! I particularly love the parking space mission!

Incredible! Best Ludum Dare entry I've played yet, at that.

this is astoundingly good!

amazing accomplishment, especially given the short time! one of the best PICO-8 games I've played. the graphics are really fantastic.

sick :)

i love your game! its fantastic.
beautiful gfx, fitting sfx and good controls. everything fits nicely together.
very well done!!

Thanks for all the feedback! Wow, I have 126 ratings on my game... I'm never going to catch up in games rated at this point. Nobody seemed to question why all the cars were dual coloured sports cars, or why a tiny shop has a huge carpark, which is great.

As a bonus, here's some hilarious bugs that somehow nobody has found so far (well, except for the last one)

These trees are not solid! The game actually builds the map out of a 6x6 grid of buildings with a road to the bottom and right of them. The shop section cheats a little by using special buildings that draw past the normal bounds, onto where the roads would be.

This section of the map is actually technically a "road" as it it between two segments, so there all collision for it is handwaved!

Chimneys on the red styled roof are not solid. Whoops! Also they're green in the middle, because I'm stupid and tried to use black.

My favorite by far. These specific cars are only cleaned up when the camera is in a vastly different position from where they are spawned. With this section only, it is possible to spawn an incredibly large number of cars in the same place, which goes off like an expensive firework as soon as you hit one.

If you're determined enough, you can crash the game by causing it to run out of memory by doing this. The framerate would be unbearable by that point, though.

Infinite points!! Too bad you gain them slower than you lose by wasting time doing this... but you can leave the car while it's happening to make deliveries!

This turned out to be one of my favorites of the Ludum Dare game's I've made, and I'm glad I did it on PICO-8. Probably would have been 200x as lame if I just did it in unity or something boring where I could be lazy and avoid conforming to a graphical style at all. I probably would have also spammed sparks everywhere and called it Low Battery 4.

Awesome. Next thing you know there'll be Retro City Rampage on the Pico. I mean, we've got DOS one, so everything's possible.

this game is so pretty and awesome it makes me angry

good job jerk

What's really scary about that is that Polish postal service actually works like this. They're putting these things even without checking if someone's home and they often don't carry actual letter/package either, if confronted about it.

Unfortunately I hit the code limit here, making something like retro city rampage would take quite a bit more scripting. I also hit the sprite AND map limit, so without some wicked sick compression tricks you're not going to get much farther than this.

Is it just me or is this a lot slower now? I might have gotten unlucky with the car spawns, but I'm getting some unusual framerate dips.

EDIT: Huh, it's just slower in the title screen. Text rendering related? Maybe the offscreen characters are counting for the first message... I'll look into it this weekend.

EDIT2: nope, will investigate later

This is great! I can't wait to play this on the PocketCHIP.

This makes me want to get a PocketCHIP too. I'm a beginner coder and was looking for a game engine. Considered JS engines, Unity, and others. I think Pico-8 is for me. The limitations make me feel like I could do the music, graphics, gameplay and story all myself. Thanks for posting this game.

Awright ! Drive like a maniac, smash cars, wreck gardens, and deliver hot and fresh pepperoni pizza in 5-minutes or less ! It doesn't get any better than this ! :D

I beat it.

I won!!! At 76360 points!

This is one of my favorite games. Thanks for making it!
