This is my first real attempt at making a PICO-8 game :) It's a simple infinite runner that borrows heavily from Spy Hunter. There's a lot more to add (sfx, music, bullets) but I'm happy with what I was able to achieve in half a day.

UPDATE 04/09/2016: Added a bunch of things, bullets, missiles and sfx :D

Looks really good from here. Yep, don't forget to have the whooshing sound when a car passes by you.

Thanks dw817. I have to admit I had looked at those vids a while back and while I've a got a few elements from the original I think mines different enough :)

Very nice. I like the meter for shooting so you just can't lay on the guns.

Only thing I can see right now is that the oncoming traffic is coming a bit too fast. I would think it's speed would be relative to my speed rather than just always being super fast...I'm passing them, not the other way around.

Spy Hunter was one of the first arcade games I ever played so it holds a special place...glad to see an ancester here.

Thanks @morningtost for the feedback. The oncoming traffic are actually 'explosive boxes' and should be moving past you. Maybe I need to make that a little more clear 🤔

I do have oncoming traffic in my todo list so I'll take into account your comments once I get to that 😊

The boxes with the skulls that you shoot are fine...but after a while there's a flashing warning at the top of the screen and then something zips down the screen and kills me. It's so fast that I can barely see it and certainly can't shoot it...thought it was a motorcycle like from the real Spy Hunter game or something.

I know the game isn't even done yet, so maybe it's premature feedback. If that "zip" is something you can't destroy, which is fine, just make sure you let the player know to avoid it rather than try to shoot it.

Are you planning a boat level too? :) Would be cool if after so much time or so many points you just switch sprites to be a boat on water. Given the homage to Spy Hunter, would be a nifty treat that could keep people going so they see what's next. You could do an air level too, like a helicopter - something Spy Hunter never had! Land, air and sea...hehe

You're talking about the rockets that fire at you! The flashing at the top and warning sound are meant to give some warning, maybe not enough though? I'll see what I can tweak, maybe a longer warning period...

I've been thinking because it's an infinite runner I'd add points for reaching a set distance (1km, 5km etc.). Maybe they could also change the landscape 🤔

Funny you bring up land, sea, air. I did try something similar for Ludum Dare 35 - http://kivlor.github.io/ludum-dare-35 (and is where this whole idea started) 😬

Does seem to be Kivlor, cars and boxes. The best game I've seen with Cars and boxes though is "Vice: Project Doom."

Oh man, Vice looks awesome @dw817! Like a proper SHMUP! I like the intro/story as well, giving me ideas ;)

For what I've been creating the limitations of Pico-8 are perfect. Although I do love the NES palette :)

Ahh...rockets, gotcha. The issue isn't the time of the warning it's that you don't know what's coming. Is it a car? A rocket? A cliff? As the player you don't know how to prepare...nothing super critical, just something I had to trial-and-error several times before just giving up (which isn't what you want people to do).

+1 for Vice Project Doom...that was a great game. Had a little bit of everything. It was Ninja Gaiden but with a more action movie theme, some of the best graphics too IMO.

You can say that again, MT. Even a ??daring?? view of a girl in a bath towel as part of the continuing story in it. WOW ! You don't get that very often from American NES games.
